Default what type of oil?

I'm new to this site, my question has proabably been asked a lot, but what I want to know is what type of oil do you use in your bike? I know that theirs got to be other oil to use in these bike other than Harley oil.

I use rev-tech.I usually order it when I order J&P stuff.Nothing wrong with the harley oil
figure it just cost a bit more for the brand name (might even be the same thing with a harley sticker on it eh?)

I use Shell20/50. The only servo in town, otherwise i have to order oil. As long as its a quality oil of the correct viscosity, it shouldnt really matter, i try not to buy anything with Harley on it, costs to bloody much.

These engines require the same type of oil that diesel engines use. The API catagorys are: CI-4, CF-4, CG-4, or CH-4. If you want to convert to synthetic, I would recommend Shell Rotella 15w40 or Red Line 20w50. Stay away from regular automotive oils because the additives are very shortlived in a high performance air cooled engine. (Actually the 88 could be considered a marginal oil cooled engine due to the pistons being cooled with oil from the underside). Automotive 'racing' oil will last about 10 miles in a Harley engine.

Problem is the additives such a defrothing are destroyed and the pump will cavitate destroying the pump and starving the oil galleries.

Without a doubt Mobil One is one of the better synthetics and is available in many weight combinations too.

Yes, with the designation CF-4 or 5. They make it...The oil weight is your preference and consideration. That is, the age, your location, the type riding you do, and how long between oil changes. You may want to use a heavier oil in a high milage engine too.
