Default Transmission Compatibility 1997 FXD Dyna Super Glide

Hi from a HD newbie.

I just bought a 1997 Dyna Super Glide.(FXD). It has either a faulty clutch or transmission. There are lots of HD transmissions on e-bay. How do I figure out compatibility with my FXD.

I would test both the Clutch and the input shaft before I would just start to order things, Take off the primary cover and confirm that your compensator and chain are all good, Then move to test and inspect the clutch. And don't forget to get a manual. If all that tests good then move to the trans.... But GET A MANUAL.........

Default Have a manual

Thanks for the tips.
I have the official HD manual. I have had metric bikes since 1968 but now find HD nomenclature confusing.

Since you don`t know enough about the drivetrain to figure out which one is the problem, you should keep your money in your wallet and ask for some help finding out what the problem is...

Describe the problem, lots of help here...

Any gearset from 1990-2006 *(except 06 Dyna) will work if it is the transmission that's bad. The shift system and shifter pawl will be different in 98 and up models but the gearset itself will work.

Default Lucky Me

Thanks for the last post as it was the most helpful

Anyway, I got the tools out and took of the primary case cover off.
The problem was that the plastic chain tensioner shoe was broken, caused by the previous trained mechanic leaving the pulley stop tool in the primary case to rattle around. Lucky it did little damage and did not jam the chain or pulleys.
$50 for new shoe, gasket and fluid and the bike is back on the road.
(and I am ahead one pulley stop tool as well)
