Default Rebuild Kits

It's getting close to riding season here in the midwest and I need to rebuild the trans on my 96 fxdwg.. As I don't have the money to go for a new 6 speed Baker, unfortunately, I am going for the rebuild kit instead.

For those of you that have gone this route or have some experience with them, would you go with a Baker rebuild kit (bearings, gaskets, etc) or a Jim's (bearings gaskets, etc)?

I know both of top quality items, I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with one or the other.

Thanks.

I`ll go in a third direction here...

The OEM transmission parts for a 5 speed are quality stuff, and will cost you less money.

What is wrong with the transmission?

Nothing really. It's just that I have the inner primary cover off to replace the main shaft seal (see here for info) so I figured I may as well do that while I'm already there.

Thanks for the reply.

You are most of the way toward removing the gearset, once removed you can inspect the parts and see if there is any unusual wear, or damage.

With the gearset removed, the main drive gear oil seal replacement is easy.

Another thing to do while the gearset is out is to remove the shifter pawl assembly, and replace the two springs.

To replace all bearings, seals, gaskets in a 5 speed using OEM parts would cost about 210.00 (that includes the primary cover gasket).

I've recently installed a Baker DD6, because I can afford one and want one. Spend as little as you need this time, as Dan suggests, so you can spring for a DD6 later, but a bit sooner!
