Default 07 FXDB Grinding

Hey all. I have a 2007 street bob that recently started grinding on startup. First thing I did was pill the starter and check the pinion gear. Very little wear, but I decided to replace it anyways. While I am in the primary, I am going to pull the clutch/ring gear and check the backside of the ring gear as from the front it looks OK. It's not grinding on every start, and sometimes when it's cold so I'm really hoping it's not the compensator($$$). Additionally I haven't noticed any bang on startup, but that could have been me not paying attention. So my question is, is there anything I can visually check on the compensator to determine the problem if the ring gear looks ok? I already checked the nut, it is torqued to spec.
