Default Ring Gear Question

I recently had starting issues with my 2007 FXDB. Took off the starter, saw metal, rotated the ring gear and..BROKEN TEETH. I am going to by a new ring gear (aftermarket) and replace myself and save money.
Do I have to use a gear with the same amount of teeth, or is there a difference? Which is better? Appreciate the advice, tips, and opinions!

Yes that would be correct. It has to match the pinion gear on the starter drive. You very well may want to inspect the pinion real close, it more than likely is munched up from meshing with the f'd up ring gear quite possibly from getting hung up and not disengaging or engaging properly. You need to do both the ring gear and starter clutch drive or you will be doing them over again.

I had broken teeth on my ring gear and put a CompuFire 10-84 Ring gear on my Fatboy. The kit included the pinion gear for the application as well. One thing for certain, the teeth are much beefier than the 102 tooth stock ring gear, and the 10-84 works great with stock to mild engine builds.

I have a 2007 Dyna, which means it sucks to be me. I cant just replace the ring gear because Harley decided to make a one-piece. I have to order a whole kit, I guess. I think I am forced to keep the 102 tooth gear...crap on Harley
