Default Shifter remains in upshift position

I've got a Heritage with a 5 speed. After an upshift, the shifter wants to remain in the upward position. I sometimes have to push it back down to make the next shift. It's only on upshifts. Shifts are still positive, the lever just won't drop back down. Ideas?

Disconnect the linkage rod from the lever at the transmission, then see if the linkage moves freely.

While disconnected from the linkage, check the operation of the shift lever at the transmission, does it return to it`s centered position?

Make sure the lever at the transmission is not the least bit loose on the shaft.

You mean the shaft the toe shifter is attached to?

If all the above does not work you may have a broken shifter pawl spring inside the transmission. I certainly hope you do not have this as the entire trans has to come apart to replace a .99 cent spring.

In retrospect I should have explained a little better. I'm running Samson fishtails on my 99 Heritage. If you didn't know, the rear exhaust pipe runs behind the rear cylinder. They came supplied with a shifter shaft that has a bend in it to clear the new location of the pipe. Long story short, the shaft was contacting and binding on the pipe. It's all good now. Thank for the tips. I was worried it was an internal problem.
