Default How much end play on main shaft?

Noise issues in my primary after my 06 dyna's stator grenaded last summer - Long story short -replaced stator/rotor but had an odd shushing sound in primary when in neutral- would go away when shifted into gear.
Over the winter I pulled it apart again and replaced a slipping clutch and and also replaced the compensator as well.
Just put it on the road last week, and still getting that odd noise in neutral. Only rode it once or twice so far since putting it back together. Upon starting the other day I pulled the clutch lever in neutral and got that telltale inner primary bearing noise. I have a baker sealed upgrade in it already but figure maybe the grenading stator might have damaged it. Maybe the main bearing got rekt too. I'm not sure.
I took it apart again down to inner primary case removal to inspect the baker bearing, but I notice a helluva lot of end play in the main shaft when i pulled on it. Like 1/16'' to an 1/8 '' almost. Is this normal?
How much should I have, if any? Any ideas of what bearings I might have killed?

If the tranny mainshaft is moving in and out up to 1/8 inch, you have problems. The mainshaft end-play is controlled by a bearing in the trapdoor on the other side of the transmission. It could be the bearing going bad or the bearing has come loose in the trapdoor. You can have some end-play as the bearing has some clearance but it should be less than about 0.020".

Thanks for the reply. I had a peek-see at that side and inner race seems to be failing- the outer part of the bearing and cage/bearings seem to be stationary when I pull it back and forth but the shaft moves in and out. Do I have to remove the whole gear set to replace the main shaft trap door bearing? Is there an easy way to replace it?

1 Yes 2 No.. You have to slide the whole gear set out and press the shafts out of the trapdoor. With the primary off you are half way there..

I read that it's a good idea to loosen the trap door bearing lock nuts before removing the gear set and opening the top door to rotate the shifter pawl out of the way. Is there anything else I should look out for? This is new new territory for me, so I don't want to overlook anything simple that will cause a headache later.

I've not done a later 6 speed but a few 5 speeds. On the 5s the shift drum is mounted on the top of the tranny so it has to be removed. On the 6 speeds the drum is mounded inside. Since you stripping the trap door, it's going to be easier to remove the door, pull the shift drum and forks. Slide the dog rings so that the tranny is in 2 gears at once, then slide the door back into the housing and remove the nuts. It's best to use a press to get the staffs out and back in. (same with the bearings). Only other thing is that there are 2 half rings that need to be held in place with grease while pressing the shafts back in place.
