Anyone have an idea what an independent Harley shop would charge to replace primary bearing? What’s the skill level required to do it? Could I do it myself?

Probably looking at 4 hours labor and whatever labor costs are for your local area plus the parts.. You're looking at at least $180 in gaskets, seals and bearing.. You can do it if you have the proper tools the hardest part is getting the clutch properly adjusted after installation and pressing out and in the new bearing.. A Factory Service Manual is essential..

Hoping that is the worst case scenario. Waiting for new tensioner to arrive to install. Not sure what else to check if that doesnt quiet it down. Crank gear and primary appear to be ok.

To diagnose a bad inner primary bearing:

Engine running, transmission in neutral, it will make noise (the mainshaft is spinning, clutch lever position doesn`t matter).

Pull clutch lever in, drop into gear, the noise will stop (when bike is stopped, in gear, clutch disengaged, the mainshaft is not turning).

I put in a Hayden M6 primary chain tensioner and 80/140 synthetic gear oil. No more rattling. It’s smooth.
