Had someone with the same thing, turned out the rear sprocket bolts were loose.

Huh, I had never heard of it called "skating". Heard of lifter failure, so, I STILL learned something new. Thanks!
To that end, the noise my bike is making seems more wheel/tire speed related than engine RPM. With the clutch pulled in, and the engine at idle, it follows the speedometer more than the tachometer. Not saying it ISN"T anything, but it doesn't appear to be engine related. What stinks is the bike goes into the shop Saturday, so it'll at least be that long until we have a better idea.
On the bright side, I'm getting a few things done around the house!
