Default Starter jackshaft bolt spins itself out

This is a new one on me. With the jackshaft bolt torqued to 72in.lbs. and the locktab bent over the head of the jackshaft bolt, I press the start button and the bolt just loosens itself. The starter is turning in the correct direction, and the finger on the locktab is in the groove on the jackshaft. Any ideas?

All I can think of is red loctite and max torque. Then let it sit overnite to cure.

But with regards to that pic.......when your'e dead...you aren't married anymore. So it's your former wife's new friend. [sm=confused06.gif]

Touche!

I tried the loctite to no avail, but thanks for the input. I'm still pondering.

Are the threads in the jackshaft and bolt in good shape? Maybe they are worn/semi-stripped enough to take a little torque and then spin out. Try a new bolt. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

Threads on the bolt and the starter are brand new. I removed the starter to check the threads on the shaft and check the splines on the coupler. All are in perfect shape. I bench tested the starter with the jackshaft attatched, and it works perfect. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming!

Don't know what you've got there, try tack welding the bolthead.

The problem is that the shaft turns in a clockwise direction as the starter is activated. Although the shaft is held in a bushing, the resistance to turning will cause the shaft to apply a force in the counterclockwise direction, tending to unscrew the bolt that holds the endshaft in place and compresses the lockwasher. So you have one of two possibilities:

1. the threads on either the bolt/shaft are stripped and the bolt cant hold in and any force will back it out.
2. the shaft is binding somehow causing more friction/resistance which is increasing the counterclockwise force compressing the lockwasher andbacking the bolt out.

Gotta be one of these issues. Is there a high temperature lubricant for the shaft or assembly you cleaned off and didn't reapply?

1) The threads aren't stripped, I have physically checked. The bolt holds torque.
2)I don't know what it could be binding on, I've tried starting it with and without the primary cover installed. I'm not aware of any necessary lube.

I'm going to try reinstalling the starter and try different torque settings. Thanks for looking, and for the comments. More, please.

My service manual calls for some high temp lubricant (I think lubriplate) on some of the components that should not be cleaned off. I would try lubing the shaft and see what happens. Something is causing more than normal resistance on the shaft assembly is my guess.
