More Clutch Cable Problems - Now What?
Darn, this has happened twice to me !
I was writing about clutch cable adjustments yesterday and I think I got good answers about "collapsing" the cable.
This morning I "collapsed it" by separating the adjuster nut and its metal sleeve on the downtube as far apart as they would go for two reasons:
1) to take the cable off the handle so I could lube it, and
2) to adjust the clutch.
Here what has happened.
When I go to screw it back down shorter, the clutch handle and cable does not get any closer to coming off the handlebar.
Did I screw up somehow? Have I caused the ***** in the throwout ramp to come out of their grooves?
The diaphram spring now looks tight, and I can't get the clutch to work. Where do I start over? Take the tranny cover off?
Crap. [:@]
P.S. This is a 2000 FXDWG w TC
Thanks

RE: More Clutch Cable Problems - Now What?
Never mind, I feel like an idiot sometimes.
Spectrexx told me to shorten the cable by screwing the cable adjuster nut and sleeve TOGETHER, and I did the opposite.
With a lot of difficulty I removed the tranny cover and checked the ramp and ***** for the throwout rod. They were OK but I had to manually pull the cable back towards the rear to get the clutch lever handle in position to adjust it again. What a pain. Buttoned the tranny cover back up, set the throwout rod adjuster bolt and nut per the instructions on the left side, and then adjusted the cable by making it LONGER until the 1/16" gap was left in the lever.
Took the bike out for a ride and the clutch works sweet.
Believe me, I wrote this down in the shop manual in big bold letters.
