Default Clutch cable problem

Just had my 96 bored to a 103 with Mackie heads and 575 cam. Put HD heavy duty clutch spring in also. Noticed some clutch slippage when grabbing a handful of throttle in 5th at about 65mph. Thought maybe there was a little tension on the clutch. Adjusted clutch cable to loosen it up, pulled the derby cover, adjusted per the service manual with set screw in until resistance back out 1/2 turn and tighten down lock nut. When I went to retension the clutch cable I ran out of adjustment. The cable adjuster went full out and came off the threaded rod. I put it back on and made sure there were 2 or threads back in the adjuster. But now the lever comes back about 1/3 of the way to the bar before there is any pressure on the lever. I don't know if it has enough pull to disengage the clutch now. Why would it go from being fine to completely maxed on adjustment and still not having full stroke at the lever. I don't think it's the adjustment on the rod. It's like the clutch cable stretched all of a sudden. Did I miss something?

I would try loosening the cable to the max 1st then adjust the clutch thru the derby to 1/2- 3/4 turn then adjust the cable for free play. I did the cable first once and I had to max out the cable to get the correct free play, I thought to myself this can't be right and loosened up the cable all the way then did the clutch pack, then did the free play via the cable, only needed about 1/4 of the cable adjustment available to get the correct freeplay. You should be okay. Oh by the way I love my DME 575's!!!!!!!!

You have to do it when the bike is dead cold. Collapse the cable completely, then adjust at the derby, then expand the cable.

Thanks Gents. Took your advice and it worked like a champ. Now I'll go see if that clutch can handle the new found power. Cheers.
