Default 2nd gear issues. Need help!

I have a 2007 Ultra that I bought used. It had some motor work done before I bought it. The only thing I know about the motor is that it has aftermarket cams, adjustable push rods and manual compression releases.

This weekend the bike started bucking in second gear when using the compression of the engine to slow the bike down. It only does it in second gear. It acts like the clutch is disengaging or the primary is slipping, but it only happens in second gear and only when slowing down using compression to decrease speed. When accelerating (even hard acceleration), all seems well. If you accelerate hard through first a second and let off the throttle (while still in second) there is a loud grinding noise

I'm going to drain the transmission in the morning and look for metal in the fluid, then I'm going to pull the primary cover and look for anything obvious. Does this sound like a good place to start? Any other ideas or suggestion of what might be the problem?

Thanks for the help

I'd look at the compensator nut in the primary. And while your in there, check for any chain slack.

Thanks for the input 95custmz. I guess I should have the fluid on hand to change the fluid in the tranny and primary case. They both hold about a qt., right? Is there a gasket for the primary cover and will I have to have a new one to put the bike back together?

I wouldn't drain the tranny just the Primary. One quart only. Yes there is a gasket for the Primary, but if you are gentle with it you can reuse.

OK There are no shavings in the tranny fluid

I'm gonna go talk to a retired Harley mechanic that lives around the corner and see what he says. He opened his own shop behind his house to do a little side work and everyone around here has been very happy with his work. I'll let you know what I find out after picking his brain about this

The primary on your 07 holds more than a quart to fill properly. Best to get 2 quarts as you will use about 4-6 ounces out of the second bottle to bring the level up to the bottom of the clutch basket with the bike straight up and level.

Let's hope the noise you're hearing is a pipe against the frame or something of that nature rather than the bearing itself. There's been a few of them going out.

Thanks for the info but this is definately not a pipe against the frame. The bike "chugs" under normal deceleration in second gear (only), and sounds like it's going to come apart when decelerating from high RPMs (like in an emergency stopping situation)

Just got home. Mechanic rode it and said it seems to be 2nd gear tooth bent and possibly the bearing on the shaft, but there's no way to know until it's torn into. He has a great reputation around here and his shop is just around the corner from the house, so I'm gonna take him the bike and some parts money Thursday and he's gonna get started.

I'll let ya'll know how it turns out

Did you ever figure this out? I have a 07 road king classic with similar symptoms after clutch cable change.
