compensating sprocket shot
My comp sprocket needs changing, so while i'm in there i figured I would change the stock clutch out also..It's an 87 FXST with a completely rebuilt 80'' motor. It's ported and polished, Bored out 30 over and has a performance cam in there. It seems like at hwy speeds, it runs a little high in the RPM range. I really don't care about the low end torque or being the fastest bike out there so i was wondering if any one knows a good combo of teeth, whether it be in the comp sprocket or trans pulley or final drive pulley that will give me a good ride at hwy speeds...and what is a good clutch kit to get.

I have a 1990 FLHS with an S&S 107 and the stock original clutch in it. The only concession to the 100+ TQ I get is a Barnet upgrade spring. I had a new compensator and chain fitted, as they were showing signs of wear, but the entire clutch is now over 20 years old (except the spring!). So I suggest unless your clutch is badly worn, replace the comp and chain. The clutch sprocket has many more teeth, so wear should be lower than on the comp.

Your at 2800 to 2900 RPM at 65mph with stock everything gearing wise , 24/37 in the primary and 32/70 on the pulleys . Easiest and cheapest route would be go to a 25t comp sprocket and longer primary chain , on the FXST you won't notice off the line and it will drop the rpms 150 to 175 at 65 . Best gain lowest money out .
Only other way is a 33T tranny pulley and it will only lower the rpms by a 100 or so .
Check this link and play with gearing calculator , fun and real numbers not guess .
87 was a change year for trannies and clutch assemblies so be very careful about correct parts for that year .
