We ended up staying in Cooke City one night late July this past year because it snowed and the road was closed. Reopened the next day around noon. Just depends on how lucky you are!!

I'll pass on the war stories and just say, ya never know. BTW stop at the store near the top and buy a bag of peanuts to feed to the furry little rodents running along the walls at the overlook. They stuff their cheeks so full they look like they will explode.

It's a karma thing. Feed the natives for good luck on the pass.

I would judge the weather the week before you are planning to go then decide....book hotels that do not charge to cancel.....love dangerously.

June 13th 2015 was open. Don't feed these critters I encountered on it.

I think you can call and ask if the road is open. Watch the weather and remember it is 10K feet higher.

It's a karma thing. Feed the natives for good luck on the pass.
Over-feeding or feeding in a specific area where humans gather will change animal behaviors. Typically, wild animals naturally disperse across the landscape, but artificial food sources promotes the
concentration of animals into a small area increases the incidence of feces, saliva, and urine, which easily harbor infectious disease-causing
micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Further if food is not consumed fully, the remaining rotting food will attract mice and insects. This increases the potential for the spread of disease .

When food provided by humans is plentiful, chipmonks reproduce large numbers of offspring. In the off season, when human food in not provided, there is not enough natural food available so the excess population of cute little furry creatures starve to death.

Do the critters and your karma a favor and don't feed the wildlife.
