Don't mean to hi-jack but have a question. Hope to ride in mid Sept from Cody up the Chief Joseph and Beartooth to Red Lodge and back to Cody the same day. Want to know if this is realistic (assuming the road is open)?

Yes. We start in Cody ride into Yellowstone through the East entrance then circle round through Cooke City. Then down Beartooth to Red Lodge for lunch, back up Beartooth and back to Cody on the Sunlight Basin aka Chief Joseph highway. it's a fun day!

We left Cody to Cook city (via Chief Joe) had lunch. Then up over the Bear Tooth to Red Lodge. Wandered around Red lodge for a few hours had ice cream then back to Cody via the hwy. Back before dark. Nice day trip

Where are you thinking to head South to instead? Not much is going to beat the Beartooth Pass, but it's a pretty big chance it's not open when you get there, sounds like.

Kind of depends how far you're riding from, too. I rode 700 miles in a day just to get to Beartooth Pass last time, I would've been pretty devastated to ride all that way and then not be able to ride it.

We are 2 couples on 2 trikes. Doing Black Hills, Little Bighorn, Yellowstone & Tetons then south through NE sandhills & through KS to home. Planning on 3 weeks.

The Beartooth is beautiful, but you have to be prepared. We rode it in early August, 2013. The day before it was sunny and 70 degrees. There was a light snow the following day when we rode it.

Yeah there is plenty else to see and ride then, I think if you're patient you could probably wait out any inclement weather, spend some time in Yellowstone or Cody. A lot can change in 3 weeks.

Go by the local weather forecasters & keep an eye on the sky. There is NO COVER at 10K feet & 60-70 MPH winds with rain & hail up there will make you pray to your higher power. I know from personal experience. As far as the critters, go, the only things we saw were the funny lookin chipmunks at Rock Creek Vista Point Overlook & there was a feed can for them. We DID see black bears alongside the Chief Joseph as we were headed for Cody, tho...
