This rides been on my radar for a while and tomorrow I’m headed south to do it, solo. I’ve been watching the weather and wanted to go to the Black Hills but it just doesn’t look good, too much wind returning Thursday. Then I thought I’d ride Rocky Mt. National park and Poudre Canyon but the high elevations are colder than I want. Then I started looking at a route Midlife Vices is looking at and I came up with a plan, kind of. Sounds a little like Goldie Locks.....too windy, too cold...just right.
Tomorrow I head over to Fruita CO and hop on I70 W to Cisco, then head to Moab along the Colorado River, this is a beautiful ride. Then south to Mexican Hat, and if I get there early enough I’ll ride to Hanksville and spend the night or if it’s a bucket list ride I’ll backtrack to Blanding so I can ride it again in the morning. Hanksville to Escalante takes in Hwy 12 which is one of the best rides in the west. My best rides list is a long one.
Next stop top will be Bryce Canyon, which has the most unique landscape you’ll ever see. Then on to Panguich and I’ll probably stay here. If I get there early I’d like to ride up to Cedar Breaks, nice loop ride to Long Valley and back to Panguich, incredible views looking west over Cedar City.
Returning home head north from Panguich on 89, I70 east to get on 89 again then north to Pigeon Hollow Junction. Then north to Mount Nebo scenic byway. When you think Bucket List rides this one fits, you top out over 9,000 feet and great views in all direction but the view west looks out over Utah Lake.
The next part of the trip is still vague, in the distance I can hear the Shooting Star Saloon in Huntsville calling and Highway 39 to Woodruff is another hidden gem.
Not on the bike but a few times. Kim and I have a small collection of Navajo rugs and we like to visit the area and try to meet the weavers. We liked going to the auction at Crown Point but it’s been a long time since we’ve been there.
Another area we like to visit is the Hopi Res. I like the small Kachina dolls. The Native art is just amazing and if I can put a few dollars in the hands of the artist and not the middle man we both win.
Rocky notice the Twoney? It shows how tight the weave is, like a tapestry.
When we were younger in the early 80s We camped several times at Monument Valley and overlooking Canyon de Chelly.
We met a native Navajo who lived in Monument Valley. He invited us to his hogan in the valley. Took us on a picture taking tour of the valley where non-natives were not allowed. Lost the photos since then. Wish they had digital cameras then.
Be sure and go into the Visitors Center if you cross Glen Canyon Dam at Lake Powell.
