Talking 2009 Fall Colors Road Trip through Colorado Mountains

This year, instead of driving the cage...I opted to take the motorcycle out for an overnighter road-trip for Fall Colors pictures.

The road trip entailed riding through/over Poudre Canyon, Cameron Pass, North Park, Rabbit Ears Pass, Yampa Valley, Phippsburg, Oak Creek, Toponas, Bond, Eagle, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Redstone, Marble (back to Carbondale for the night), Aspen, Independence Pass, Twin Lakes, Buena Vista, Antero Junction, Wilkerson Pass, Divide, Woodland Park, Deckers, Buffalo Creek, Pine, Conifer, Morrison and then back to my house.

Here are the pictures from the trip:

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Around here, we just see dried out corn and soybean fields.

Hoping to make the 2010 Fall Colors ride a full week-long adventure, along new photography equipment (new DSLR & lenses).

It's a labor of love Sharing the annual fall colors pictures is just something I have to do.

Over the few weekends, I've been mapping out (in my mind) where I will go for 2010 and am considering doing some camping in a couple of areas so that I can just hike all day long and get some really good pictures, but we'll see how things turn out. :P

By the names of the towns you've given; it appears that most of your riding was west of Denver.
I plan on riding to Colorado next year and my plans are to spend most of my time in the southwerstern part of the state.
I want to ride "in the mountains"; what roads -excluding main highways; would you recommend?

G,
Yeah, I try to ride on 2-lane roads most of the time, as I find the highway boring. There 'are' times when I'll ride on the highway, but definitely prefer the back roads. Here are some roads I would ride

  • US160 from Del Norte up over Wolf Creek Pass is a fun & scenic ride.
  • US550 from Durango to Montrose is worth a million dollars (called the Million Dollar Highway)
  • CO149 from South Fork to just west of Gunnison is another fun ride
  • CO133 from Delta to Carbondale is pretty too (part of this road is where I do 'some' Fall Colors pics annually)
  • CO-82 from Carbondale to Twin Lakes, up over Independence Pass is awesome!
  • Cottonwood Pass, from Hotchkiss to Buena Vista is another that is worth the time!

I could go on and on...

PM me when you get closer to the ride next Summer.

I almost did the Ouray, Silverton, Durango run last week, but decided to head to Jackson Hole instead. Love both rides and the colors are fantastic. The Million Dollar Highway is a great ride also.
