loniest hwy 50 nevada
Was through there just over 2 weeks ago on a 2k mile trek to the coast and back. There's a reason it is the Loneliest Highway ... but it's really not any worse that crossing western Kansas. ;-)
A couple of the little towns along the way (like Austin) are well known speed traps. Watch how fast you're going and you'll be okay.
There is a good BBQ place in Fallon. I can't remember the name of it, but you can't miss it when you go down the main street.
We stayed at the Best Western in Eureka. Price was okay, for middle of nowhere, and the people were very pleasant. They let us park our bikes right under the overhang next to the office and treated us pretty well. The rooms were comfortable, and the hot tub was really HOT! It's a giant tub, too, probably as big as the swimming pools in some of these motels.
The Chinese joint down the street (easy walking distance) had pretty good food. The waitress was very funny, though I'm not sure she understood most of what we said. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I understood most of what she said either.

If you go thru Carson City make sure you make the side trip thru Virginia City to Lake Tahoe. Virginia City is a tourist city, but it still has a lot of interesting buildings from its boom days as a gold town.. All the small towns btwn Carson City and Ely have gas stations but may not have gas.. make sure you don't pass up a chance to get gas.. the next town may be out or they may be closed.. You will not be disappointed if you take Hwy 50 across Nv. Outside of Fallon there is a Navy Air Training Station.. You may encounter low flying jets.. We saw some impressive flying when we rode thru..
That's where the Navy holds it's Top Gun weapons training school moved their from Miramar in 1999 and they have an annual Top Gun competition there as well.
I've ridden US-50 from Fallon, NV east to Delta, UT. It is great! Did this ride in early July and the morning was cold! I put on just about every layer I had, including my rain gear to stay warm. I camped out in the middle of nowhere, but there is a hotel in Eureka, NV and one in Austin as well. Not sure about the other little towns. The basin & range is great...way better than I-80!
We rode Hwy 50 in June last year from Carson City heading to St. George. There was a usual cold front that was over the west while we rode across. We started at 6 am and didn't take our heavies off until around 1 pm. It was cold. Someplace between Austin and Eureka there was a guy walking down the hwy. No backpack. No nothing... just walking. There wasn't house for miles around. He never looked up when we past. It was strange because we couldn't determine where the hell he came from or was going for that matter. Worth the trip..... once.

We rode Hiway 50 in August 08. We spent the night on the Utah-Nev state line, it was 45 degrees the next morning and stayed cool until mid-day, so pack accordingly. We call the Nevada Tourist Comm. and they sent us a survival kit. It was a "passport" that is to be stamped at 5 towns across Nev. A service station in each of the five targeted towns stamped our card. At the end we mailed the cards in and received a "Survival Certificate" and a lapel pin. Request one packet per rider. I glad I did it once.
Absolutely loved it. Get gas in Fallon and every place you have a chance to. Check out Sand Mountain; it's really cool.
I did it on my first solo cross-country trip in '07. I was a little nervous about it because I was on my own, but it was one of my favorite parts of the trip. I hit a little rain. You can see the storms ahead of you, but it doesn't mean you'll hit them. You'll dry out quickly if you do.
I threw up a tent on a small patch of grass in an RV park in Eureka, but there were hotels there.
