Question How far from Auto Train in VA

I'm looking to find out how far I should expect to go if I get off the Auto Train in Lorton, VA and start riding at say 10am. We'll be heading to front royal, then down skyline drive, then pick up BRP. I know we'll stop along the way for food, pics, and stuff, but what town should I be looking to stay in to be off the road by dusk. I was guessing Bedford, VA just outside Roanoke to be on the safe side. We're not in a rush, and will be stopping here and there, but I just want to get a good idea of where to consider for the end of day 1. Oh yea...this will be Labor Day weekend...probably matters.

thanks

A lot depends on the weather - when the weather on Skyline is bad, it's can be complete crap.

true, but we're ready to roll in downpours. we got trapped in stuff like that pic of yours on foothills parkway last year for what seemed to be 50-75 miles. assuming there's none of that...would Bedford be doable? or is that too far/short?

It shows about 291 miles from Lorton, VA to Bedford, VA taking SPW and BRP. Be about 8 hrs total ride time. If weather is good and you don't get behind it could be done. I live about 45 minuest from Bedford and BRP. If you want to stop and see some sights and eat you may want to tack a couple hours and make consider it a 10 hr trip. Have fun it will be a great ride.

Are you planning on interstate riding mostly, or do you want to avoid it? Because you can grab Price William Parkway (234) toward Manassas, and grab 29 to 211 and get onto Skyline Drive. Or, you can take I-95 to 495, to I-66 and head west to Front Royal.

If you take I-81, there's a good place to eat in Staunton (rt 250W), called Mill Street Grill. It's about 3-4 miles off I-81.

10 hours...good day right there! That's about what I guessed it should be. As long as we're off the BRP by sundown we're happy. Had a deer pop out last year in front of me...thank god he kept going.

Carman, we'll be avoiding all superslabs until we hit florida on the way back...unless we have time.

Thanks for the info everyone...
