Agree with Dave in the Bison. Two walked right at me while sitting in traffic. One sniffed the front of my street glide and walked beside me, not a foot from me. I was nervous but all was good as I just waited. 2nd encounter was more generic. They just walked across road as they felt. Just know it an happen and be patient and there will be no problems. Great ride thru park.

 

Um no I would be very nervous if you come across a group Bison. I am at work and can not link youtube from work just go and search on youtube yellowstone bison motorcycle you will not like what you find....

 

I would do my run through the park very early. We hit the gate at 7am and it was great. No traffic at all. Walked right up to see Old Faithful with maybe 50 other people. Mid day I would do the roads outside of Yellowstone.

 

 

there a ton of videos of bikes being attacked by bison alot the time cars block you so you can get away one main thing that is in most attacks is a young bison being protected by older one!!I lived south of the park and yes they attack all the time....

 

That's all wrong. Am I the only one who thinks a strategic retreat is in order when facing down a 2000 lb animal?

Like I said - early. Here's a ride towards the east gate around 9 AM. We entered at the West Yellowstone gate. As you can see, the campers are starting to head in. Not bad now, but by noon it will be like the videos above - traffic jams.

 

That's why I'm staying in the Grand Teton / Yellowstone park area itself and mid-week June 4-7;
I want to be able to get out early and enjoy things so that while most tourists are coming in, I'll be
heading toward the outer areas.

At least that's the theory... LOL!!

 

If it hasn't been said already - bring cold weather gear. It was below freezing at the higher elevations in August 2011.

 

And maybe even August 2013!

 

Yep! I even just bought a new pair of silk long-johns..

I've got heated gloves, wear layers, use rain gear to hold in warmth and have a modular helmet.
I used to have a set of heated insoles, but the wiring chafed through. I may redo them before
this trip or just depend on those foot-warmer inserts..
