Default Solo Trip, Texas to Pacific Coast Highway

Leaving next week to Morro Bay then headed North up the PCH. My riding partner backed out today so I'm planning on going solo.

I have searched all of the PCH post & have plenty of places to see & ride. I am just wondering what is the best way to get through San Francisco. The map looks like the PCH ends just prior to the Golden Gate bridge. I would really like to ride across the bridge and get some pictures of the area. I should make it to the bridge on a week day.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

Highway 1 continues across the golden gate and up the coast. It continues to be spectacular only with less traffic. At least ride up to Stinson Beach.

I didn't have any problems getting across the bridge on Hwy 1 and if you go into San Francisco the first time you ride up those steep hilly roads can be a little intimidating, but they were fun.

Oh and one piece of advice I got along the way was "get off of the roads before dark" the fog rolls in fast and it can reduce visibility to almost 0 sometimes and it can be cold.

Forgot to mention; Commute traffic on the bridge sucks! Remember ya can lane share.

You will be coming up the westside of the City. PCH merges with CA 35 as you enter SF. Follow "19th Ave" to Park Presidio all the way to the Golden Gate. There are a lot of signals but they are timed. This side of town is flat do you will not be fighting the hills. This also the "suburban" side of town do it is much less conjested.

In two weeks, I am doing the opposite. I am leaving Portland to Santa Barbara. I am taking I 5 first, cutting over to the coast at Cresent City. From there, i plan on hugging the coast all the way, weather dependent. It can get REALLY foggy on the north coast. I will head inland to US101 if it is too cold. 20 miles inland could be 30 degrees warmer.

Thanks DBlass. I will follow your advice. I am retired so I will not be rushed.
I am planning on going to Crescent City also then turning inland to Grants Pass. From there I will follow some of the scenic roads up to Mt. Hood. Then turn East & head home.

Thanks for the help.
