On Boom! GTS systems and I'll bet on the newer Skyline the rules are the same, just Cardo instead of Sena.

• HD-Branded Headsets: These contain proprietary firmware that "handshakes" with the WHIM. This unlocks the A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), which allows for high-quality stereo sound.
  
• Standard Sena/Other Headsets: When the WHIM detects a non-HD headset, it refuses to use the A2DP stereo profile. Instead, it forces the connection into the HFP (Hands-Free Profile). This profile is designed for phone calls, not music; it is low-bitrate, mono-only, and lacks the frequency range required for rich audio, making it sound "tinny" or like an old AM radio.
  

 

@r0de_runr - Does the Cardo work on the GTS Stereos in A2DP Codec format..?

I'm not changing the 2020 FLHTKSE just yet, but the music / CarPlay / phonecalls [wife] etc - I will fight with my Harley-Davidson SENA 50 for now. No one at the dealership knew if HD Cardo would work on the WHIM + GTS.
The dongle didn't work when I tried plugging it in. I guess it is a software thing. I am compliant for now, but the SENA I bought was the last one they had.

CARDO works on whim but does not use HiFi Stereo. So sound quality is similar to phone audio, and in mono. Also, HD-branded SENA units are configurable somewhat on the screen, CARDO and non-HD-branded SENA are not.

 

Gotta be honest here, that sounds like a selling point. Not having the old lady yapping at me all the time while I'm riding? I showed mine the four basic hand signals for gas, bathroom, break, and cop when I taught her to ride. 😁

The SENA SRL systems look pretty slick, truly integrated into the helmet - but WHIM and this codec bs keeps a person in the "lane." I think the WHIM was made by SENA - IIRC. You'd think eventually they would allow for open use... you'd think.
