Default Cam Thrust Washer Kit

Bought these from Cycle Gear to shim my cam. Figured I'd buy a set so I can pick the best one. How bad could they be, right? Well, these are total trash every one of them is garbage. Not one of them gave me a consistent reading. This was the one that was kinda close to what I needed so I took some pics. It's tapered by over .010" You can see the gap in the pic where I have the whole thing in my calipers. They aren't available form Harley but I was able to find the NOS one that I needed on ebay. Another lesson learned...

Send them back for a refund.

S&S or Eastern are usually good. I couldn't find the correc tpart number on the S&S website, so Eastern is listed below.

Thank you. I have to learn to be a better searcher of DK. I put "cam thrust washer" and the Harley part number in the search and never got that kit. That's why I ordered it from Cycle Gear originally. When I ordered the shim kit I ordered some other stuff from DK and I had DK's stuff in my mailbox before Cycle Gear even got around to shipping my order. I did make them take it back and pay the shipping. I told them I'd have been happier if they sent me a turd in a box rather than that kit. It's completely useless. Now, instead of working on my bike tonight, I spent it dealing with returning it and getting my printer to print out the shipping label. I thought this was funny though.

I'd still measure then when they arrive. They shouldn't vary by much, if any. Less than you will find with a .001 mic.

For sure. Here's the one I took out which I assume is original. It measures exactly that all the way around. The one I have coming is nos HD. I'm at .020" gap right now and I have a .075" shim coming. That should put me right where I need to be.

Worse comes to take a thick one to a local machine shop, maybe 10 minutes on the surface grinder and done.

The ones from cycle gear look like they are stamped out from sheet steel. Will not get a good shim from sheet steel no matter how it is stamped.

Only way to get a good true shim is to have it machined from bar stock.

No way I was putting any of those things in my bike or letting them keep my money for that kit. They're already on their way back to Cycle Gear. I'll use my mini lathe to machine one myself if I have to, but I have an NOS one on the way that should be good.

Surface grinder can finesse it to exact in tenths - we do not use digital measuring as to me the metal verses temp of the caliper varies the size - we only use a tenths starrett mike - electric caliper to me is a wood worker tool

I have several different mics and dial indicators but that Mitutoyo set is at the top of my measuring tool drawer and has been my go-to for 25 years. I have a nice Brown & Sharpe dial mic but even that measures to .001". I also have a cheap, plastic digital caliper that wouldn't change size with temperature, though I fail to see how the metal one would skew the reading since you zero it before you measure. I also don't see how a measuring tool that goes to .0001" or .00001" could be considered a woodworking tool.
