1982 FXB 'Sturgis' dry clutch question
Hey, question for clarity. 1982 FXB with a dry clutch, all original equipment, pads and steels in great shape. Clutch started slipping a few weeks ago. Checked it out and decided to add spring pressure on the basket. Harley repair manual calls for 1.032" between inner and outer plate but currently they are 1.375". Has my manual been updated because of a typo or has my clutch REALLY been that far out of adjustment all these years??? BTW, it is a 3 bolt basket.
Thanks in advance for all assistance.

1 1/32 is correct...but that only applies if you have brand new Harley parts that were manufactured in 82...The manual also says to increase the tension on the spring adjusting nuts 1/2 turn at a time till the clutch holds...do not increase tension more than it takes to make the clutch hold.

That's not a big deal to pop that apart and have a look at the plates. You can scuff them up if they still have good meat on them and that will help. Sometimes they just get a little glazed up and can slip. Just remember how far in your adjuster nuts were so that you can go back to the aprox. settings and when backing out the last nut, hold the plate in so that the plate and springs don't fly off at you.
