I currently ride a 11 FLHTK with a stage 1. It had a cat in the collector part of the head pipe. Getting conflicting information whether the softails have a cat in the pipes or mufflers. The touring class bikes make a lot of heat with the cat so that is one reason to do the stage 1, get rid of the cat. How is the heat on a stock fatboy? I know that sitting on a air-cooled engine will make some heat but how is it compared to the touring bikes.
Plans are a fatboy low, open intake, SE street performance mufflers, and a fuel management, likely a fuelpak. Don't want loud, but do want to hear the engine. Rode one from a demo day and hard to hear the engine for proper shifting.
Thanks, that is what I was told 1 place. Does a stock muffler with the cat get hot or because it's behind you not noticeable? The cat in the touring is under the right thigh and with the lowers can get hot. But the 103 does make heat anyway.
I have after market pipes on my LO but I never notice to much heat from the pipes. It's the rear cylinder where I get all my heat. But a Captain Itch Crotch Cooler to care of that problem.
H-D started installing catalytic mufflers on non-California softails starting in 2010. Prior to that only California and export bikes had cats. Softails do not have cats in the head pipe! Touring models and the dyna fatbob, wideglide and switchback have cats in the head pipe. If you remove the mufflers and look inside the inlet you will clearly see the catalytic material. So it's simple, getting rid of the cats is just a muffler swap.
Recently I traded in a 09 night train for a 2013 fatboy. Last week I installed some screaming eagle street performance mufflers. I refused to buy the new ones since they have cats in them. I found a set of the discontinued 49 state (non-cat) street performance mufflers (80496-07) discounted online. It was too good a deal to pass up.
They are slightly louder than stock but have a much nicer tone. They are a little too quiet but that's what I wanted. I've done loud and I'm done with loud. They do flow better as the bike had decell pop and other lean symptoms after the install. I ordered a Power vision tuner and billet a/c kit from Fuel Moto and now the bike runs fantastic.

That's interesting information. I was under the impression the SE mufflers had NO cat, so getting current stuff will defeat part of the process. I also do not want real loud, just to be able to hear the engine. Guess I will re-think my stage 1 plans.
There is another option available to you. Have your head pipes ceramic coated. I am in the process of having the 39" Samsons put on. I have been following "True Dual" threads and I have seen where some have said the heat off of the pipes at times gets pretty hot. So, I took and had them ceramic coated. I will be able to tell you how effective they are in about another week. It ran me $125.0, far less expensive than many of the other options that are out there. Yep, H-D and their dealers don't advertise the fact that the SE SP mufflers have cats in them. Several people on this forum have found out the hard way that they do. The only non-cat SE SP mufflers that fit the 07-13 Fatboy/Lo are 80496-07 (slash out) and 80497-07 (slash down) and they are getting hard to find as they have been discontinued for two years.
The 103s run hot period, as previously posted. Regarding the mods you are planning, I recently replaced my V&H Big Shots with stock headers and SE slip ons. I have a Stage 1 and Pro Tuner and previously had it dynoed with the old setup. I LOVE how it is running now, and I didn't change the mapping. Gone is the gurgling, popping and rattling drone from the Big Shots. I am done with loud. The SEs provide a nice, deep exhaust note, albeit mellower, which allows me to hear the sound of the engine and enjoy the ride more.
Well, I did what a lot of people here do, called Fuel moto tech support. Explained what I wanting to do and the recommendation was the V&H 3" round slash tip mufflers, their open intake and the PC V tuner. Chose that rather than their micro EFI tuner so I could make timing adjustments in addition to fuel. Not I just need to buy the bike.
I went on the Dennis Kirk site and customer comments on the mufflers was very positive with comments noise level was good, not too loud. Anyone running them that could comment?
