Why cover plate when posting online?
people talk about paranoia, remember when lifelock first came out and the owner of the company used to post his own personal ssn on the side of the truck in the commercial? notice he doesn't do that anymore? that's because he has had his identity stolen 13 times....

So you cover your plate when you go out on your bike? Bike night, etc? Certainly its simple to take pics of bikes, post them on social media, etc. All over the net.
How are they going to track your plates, exactly? (and who is they?)

Yah, I did not even have to engage my brain. Even if it meant something else, everyone I know got my same thought.
Note my derby cover. In Michigan, you only get 5 characters. Tons more/better options if we could have 6
