Some people get it, some may figure it out the hard way, while others may never know. I'm not concerned about random people I see on the street knowing my plate number.
Hypothetically if you post your plate number one day, 3 months later you offend some nutcase on the net because you make fun of his doo rag, 2 months later thinking nothing about it you post you and your wife are going on a roadtrip. He has all the info he needs to find your house when he knows your not home. Imagine that on top of that you've been posting pictures of all your firearms and other toys at home that are there alone and unguarded. Sounds silly but it happens. In addition to all the good folks you see here there are many who lurk in the shadows just waiting for stuff like that.
Chances are, nothing is going to happen. But, why take the chance? There are crazies on this forum, just like everywhere else. I'm not as worried riding down the road, or at a bar. But, at least there I know what I'm dealing with.
It's a good idea in case somebody has an accident of some sorts and then wants to try to cover his/her *** by saying "that it was XXX-1234 that ran me off the road i.e." It happens peeps!

You are saying they memorize someones plate so they will have an excuse if they have an accident??? That sounds like amazing prior planning.
I'm one of those guys who cover the plate. When you ride on the street, a small percentage of the folks that see you are Harley enthusiasts, when you post a pic on a forum 99.9% are Harley folks or they wouldn't be there. I spend many many hours and lots of $$$ on my bikes. If I can take one tiny prevention to make sure that bike is still in the garage when I come home from a trip on another one, I'm gonna take that small prevention. If I had box stock bikes, I wouldn't be as concerned but NO insurance co is going to replace my bikes for what I have in them....
