Default RE: Which Oil, Filters, Sparkplugs, etc. for your Harley

I don't want to sound like a company guy (and I am not)- but I want to be sure the items on my bike do not void the warranty, and are easily available as we travel. We use HD not because I enjoy parting with my money, I just never know where I will have a problem, and the techs get a little antsy when the see non typical parts on a bike- they they tend to look for other short cuts. Our local dealer sent our jugs and heads to diamond cut in CA. They offer a diamond cut oil filter assy. The dealer told us he would not put it on his bike since it required a speciality filter, and i we were in Daytona, Sturgic, or tombstone Idaho- We may not be able to get going until such a part is found. (And in doing so- lost the sale of an accessory)
I know that Harley tests and tests some more, and I think their stuff is most suitable in the critical areas of oil, plugs, and filters.

Just my rant!

I'll agree witcha up to a point. If you put some aftermarket stuff on and it requires generally unavailable everywhere components, you can get stuck. But ya gotta remember that HD oil, plugs, & filters are made by the low bidder, and better-than-HD's products are available anywhere auto parts are sold.

Aftermarket parts can definately put you between a rock and a hard spot....watched a guy at Laughlin throw a tantrum over a flat tire....seems aftermarket rims use a different valve stem position , all he needed was a tube.

Iam going to carry this list in the event I cant get OEM and need to get going........with that a big THANKS is in order.

I just use the Harley Davidson stuff. It's probably just as good as any, easy to find, and if you keep receipts, there could hardly be a warranty issue.

Regards,

Bill

I think Skip hit it pretty close, although it may not be the lowest bidder, but it will be the one with the highest cost incentive. (i.e. meets the minimum requirements with acceptable lead time and ability to meet production schedules while providing competitive pricing) It would not be in any vehicle manufacturers best interest to provide a product which does not meet minimum quality, outside lead-time, inability to produce sufficient quantities or at a higher than forecasted costs. It is well documented that better than OEM components are as readily available as cheap imitations and as long as any of these meet the vehicle manufacturers specifications through verified testing and documentation the associated warranties will not be voided. Before I obtained my Mechanical Engineering degree I was first a motorcycle wrench and then a ASCE certified mechanic and I know of many, many wrenches out there who prefer their own brand of parts and may s-t-r-e-t-c-h the truth somewhat in reference to warranties.

There are some good alternative products on the list, but Fram filters are garbage.
A classic example of a famous brand that was once synonymous with quality.

I do agree that the list is helpful to get me home...........I have to question the oil filter section as to fittage. Oil filters have may other features than just screwing on- check value use (or not), flow pattern, flow restriction, etc. I think I would be careful in that one area, for fear of upsetting my critical lube system! May not be an issue- but have seen this problem on the cars................

There are a couple web sites where oil filters are examined. As pointed out, Fram filters are pretty poor quality. I use Napa Gold filters made by Wix on my Evo. Someone told me the TC filter setup doesn't use a check valve because of its location in the oil system. True?

We've beaten the oul issue to death. Suffice it to say synthetic is a better oil than regular oil, but if you change at 2500 miles and don't "cook" it in a parade or other excess heat situation, the dino will work fine. And HD synth isn't as high a quality as several other brands that happen to be less expensive, to boot.

Spark plugs? HDs are excellent. Anybody know who makes 'em? I usually use Autolite or NGK, and have never had one fail. Use to always use Champion, but haven't in quite a few years because of too many failures.
