Default New to Harley-Davidson. Fairly new to riding. Questions about 99 Sportster 883 xlh.

Hello to all. Excited about being part of these forums and exploring the world of Harley-Davidson in the future. I would like to know if anyone would be interested in assisting me and answering a few questions that I have about a 99 Sportster 883 xlh as a first bike for me to ride or normal basis.

I've got a '98 XLH. Boatload of fun. Post pics and ask anything as long as it's not a stupid question - just kidding.

Sorry guys new to this must have posted wrong so my question about the 99 Sportster 883 is that I'm a large guy 6 ft 280. I know I'm going to look silly on this bike but I'm new to Harley and fairly new to riding I have the opportunity to pick this bike up for 3000 cash with 5000 miles on it bike is almost mint. Whether I would decide to keep the bike or trade it in to trade up do you think this is a good value and an okay Harley for me to start with. Thanks guys for any and all advice and comments

Size is the only issue with the Sporty IMHO, I am 6" but weigh 180. I am very happy to ride them, however, if you have aspirations of going over the road, your size, or really the size of the sporty frame is not ideal for that. However, if you just want to blast (or putt) around town, the Sportster is great fun. The only way to really know if you are comfortable is to throw your leg over, but asking the collective braintrust here is a close second.

Pricing is very dependent on location. If you are in a smaller city and there isn't much inventory, 3k is a good deal. If you are in a big city and there are lots of bikes around, you could probably get a newer rubber mount but that is its own argument.

thank you so much for the advice. My my plan is just to get back home from bull riding Ben 10 plus years since I've been on a bike and get comfortable with Harley in general for maybe about 6 months and then Trade It Up Get maybe a diner or something larger more suitable for a guy in my size

Ride, enjoy and your bike (or body!) will prompt a few questions along the way. We can help you with both bike-specific and personal comfort subjects.
