Has anyone had to add oil between services yet? I have 3200 miles on my Street Glide Limited 117 VVT and I had to add 5 oz at 1750 miles (I had 1000 mile service) that put it at 6 dots up hot. Now at 3200 miles I'm around 4-5 dots up Hot. I checked inside the breather and everything is bone dry. The spark plugs look good. The rear plug had some light oil on the threads but the plug almost seemed hand tight.
I've read that it could take up to 5000 miles for the rings to fully seat, not sure if that's true. I've had a 103 ci and 114 ci I did both break in the same and never had oil level issues.
I'm thinking of switching to AMSOIL to see if I notice a difference.
The rings will mostly seat in 50 miles and no more than 500.
That's not a lot of oil gone on a new motor. I would get it hot and top it off to full mark. Monitor it but it probably won't get to add before maintenance is do.
Checked properly at the full mark does not make it use more oil or blow it thru the vent. And it gives you some wiggle room thru the maintenance cycle of needing to add oil.
Ok, thanks. Yes, if my math is right the consumption is slowing down. Since at 1750 miles I added 5 oz to bring up to 6 dots above add, and now 1400 miles later it is down about 5-6oz from the last time I added the 5 oz.
I am guessing from your math you have used 10 Oz of oil in 3200 mile.
And there so many variations of dip sticks, but 6 dots sounded like your over cautious of running the oil near to the full mark check hot a couple minutes after turning it off.
Running it 5 Oz above the add mark is just opening the door to let it annoy you.
Does your stick look like this? I would prefer the upright level measurement and then see if the on stand matches. Obviously the on stand is easier.
I had the 1000 mile service. At 1750 I added 5 oz to bring back up to 6 dots above add HOT, now at 3200 miles it's down 2 dots when checked HOT. So I went 1450 miles this time before it dropped 2 dots. Initially it dropped at 1750 miles, 750 miles after the 1k service. So, I doubled the miles before it dropped 2 dots. I'm hoping this trend continues and it stops completely.
My 2024, RG 117” uses 16 to 20oz of oil in between 5000 mile services. I check after most rides. Idle upright after ride for 1 to 2 minutes then check on jiffy stand. The oil level will be 2 dots higher than the cold level check in the morning. One set of dots =4oz of oil. My level tends to move more if I’m spending time on cruise at 75 to 85mph on the interstate. These bikes should not use any oil but seems to be the way it is. My 21 was the same way. All of my Harley’s over 48 years have used some oil with the exception of my 89 FXRS.
Which oil are you running and has the consumption been consistent since day 1?
Is your throttle body dry?
currently Liqui Moly 10W-60. Have also run 20W-50. The liqui moly runs cool and quiet. During service, I fill with 4qts 10oz. Puts the oil level at the top of the arrow while on the jiffy stand, 5 dots up from add line on side stand.
My gen 2 does not vent into the throttle body like the gen 1’s. TB is bone dry. You said you have a 117 VVT? Thought VVT was only on the 121’s?
The 4qts 10oz puts you up 5 dots from add on the jiffy stand, hot or cold? Which engine do you have?
I do have the 117 VVT in the street glide limited.
