anything less than 3/32" tread depth is an indication of max. safe tire wear. based on your mileage and not knowing your driving habits or tire type, i would say you probably are due for new rear rubber.

is it showing cords yet? if yes replace, if no keep truckin.. with a 12 age won't be an issue the only other thing that could be an issue is, has the tire squared off? meaning you ride so much straight line the center of the tire actually looks flat like the bottom of a box.

Should be tread wear indicators in the grooves of the tire. The location of the indicators is usually marked on the sidewall with a triangle. Find the triangle, follow it up onto the tread and there should be a lump of rubber somewhere in the tread in that area. If it's flush with the surface of the tire, it's technically due for a swap.

True, but tire treads are measured and expressed in 32nds for some silly reason.

This is generally how I know it's time for new rubber.

Just wrap some black duct tape or 200 MPH tape around it and you're good to go!

I've ridden on 'may pops', back when tires weren't in my budget.
