Default New Softtail Owner with Questions

I picked up a pretty nice '06 Deluxe on Saturday. Compared to my Sportster….man, what a ride!

Anyway, after doing some basic research, I have some questions I can't seem to find answers for.

Firstly, it needs a battery. Not a big deal. I knew it was weak when I bought it. Upon removing the seat, I was pleasantly surpised to see it already has a Power Commander on it. Coming from a carb'd bike. I need to figure out how to use it. The previous owner, who only had the bike bike a short time before his new girlfriend demanded he sell it, didn't know much about it.
Also under the seat are a couple gizmos that I don't know the purpose of. Circled in red in the first photo. The gizmo on the right has a couple leads that come out from under the fender struts with a plug in connector. The one on the left has some cheezy crimp connectors that attach the wiring. Anyone have any idea what those might be? Tough question, I know.

Then, about the strut bolts for quick bag attachement… I've ordered a seat back brace for my lady that attaches to those, but I haven't received it yet. Would I be able to attach side bags to those as well, having both the back rest and bags at the same time? And are there aftermarket bags that fit those?

Lastly, the bike has a Rinehart 2-1 exhaust. I like that a lot. Is the baffle able to be removed to add packing in order to tone down the sound?

That's all I have for now. Thanks!

A picture of the entire bike too please.
Just in case there are things that look like I might be able to help you with. You know.

The bike has one of those LED "gas caps" on the left side of the tank that is supposed to show fuel level. Maybe that is what it might be part of. But there is a connector like the one the arrow points to on both sides tucked up under the fender struts.

I saw those bags on the HD parts site the other day. They were more than a bit too pricey for something I may use every now and then.

But, if the price is right.....Lemmee know what you need to get for 'em.

Crappy cell phone pic of whole bike....

By the indications of your picture, you better get that bike checked out. Appears to be running lean! Your heat shields on your exhaust should never be turning blue like they are.

Look under the tank see if there is any switches , really look everywhere they hide LEDs everywhere . The baggs I'm asking 500 OBO but you would have to pay for shipping to I live in Iowa .

There's no heat shield there. The shield ends where the muffler begins.

Haven't had my bags off, but I would guess those attachments on the rear strut are for Karman's bags. That's what mine look like with the detachable backrest off, minus what's holding the saddlebags on.

I'd tend to agree with the above comments about possible LEDs - maybe the prior to previous owner had LED tails and plugged in the load balancer there? or perhaps a Run/brake/turn module that was removed??

I don't know jack about tuning etc., but when I saw that full bike pic the first thing that caught my attention was the discolored exhaust...i agree with the previous comment about getting it checked out - who knows what the guy 2 owners ago did with that power commander...

Nice lookin' ride though!

You're right about the bike's past owners. Who knows for sure. I'll for certain be checking things out along with doing a full service, which will include a compression check. I reckon in the meantime, I'll be studying up on the use of the power commander. But, it looks a LOT worse in the photo than it actually is.

I will say, having had a lot of experience with air cooled race motors (Air cooled VW), that run a collector style exhaust, it's pretty common for the header extension to color well past the collector, even though the primary pipe itself has only colored the first few inches. It has something to do with increased velocity and a "re-burning" once past the merge.

Be that as it may, I plan on doing some long road trips, and I want to be sure that I get no surprises miles from home.

I'm thinking about welding an O2 bung into one of the pipes and using a wide band O2 meter to see where it's at. I know the factory tunes 'em really lean. A lot leaner than I think they should be. And it only way to know for sure is to measure it out on the road. And honestly, I'd much rather have 'er a little fat than lean. Most of the wide band meters available will do a data log so you can see where it's at over a wide range. I have access to a lot of this stuff due to my drag racing ventures in a vintage VW.
We'll get 'er done!

Karman, I'll give those bags some thought. The price is OK. A good chunk less money than the new ones. However, I pretty much blew a big chunk of my available cash on this bike, so I'll need to recover a bit. It's beans and weenies for dinner for the next couple weeks!
