I had the EXACT same thing in the EXACT same place on the EXACT same tire last season. At first I thought some dirtbag tried to cut my tire, but if they wanted to do that, why didn't they just stab the sidewall...? I measured it with a depth gauge and it wasn't that bad.

I let it go for a bit and I noticed that as the tire heated up and cooled it opened up a little bit. During that time there was a lot of highway construction going on on the roads I was traveling. Eventually I rationalized that I hit something on the milled roads that caused it. I rode for a while until the tire needed to be replaced. I didn't notice a degraded ride quality at all.

I am funny about tires because I had one blow out on a busy highway at 60mph in my younger day. If I have any doubts, I replace.

Even though there are some that might baby a tire like that and make it last as long as possible, I take the condition of my tires a little more serious than some might and I'd rather replace it while I am at home than have to do it while on a trip someplace.

Replace.... depending on how old the tires are, you may be able to save a little $$$ if they are still under the tire makers warranty.

Personally I would run it and just keep an eye on it. With the amount of layers and belts in the tread of tires I don't think you are in danger of a blowout. Have a similar cut in mine. On season 2 running that way. I just monitor it. No changes yet. Once that happens I will reevaluate replacing it.

If you're just putting around town, run with it. You know you'll walk out one day and it's flat. The highway and freeway speeds, replace it soon.
