Default Engine Build (just got the Fatboy back)

Picked up the bike this past weekend after some engine work and installation of a complete bar/control set.

Basically a 95" hot setup kit. 95" cylinders, high flow heads, high compression pistons, SE 211 cams, cam plate with hydraulic tensioner and high flow oil pump, push rods, SE tappets, SE carb/intake, and I went back to a 2-1 exhaust. Bars are 14" Wild ! Outlawz.

Initial thoughts -

I'm still breaking the engine in and riding like the cops are behind me at all times, but I can definitely feel the difference in torque while only at 10-15% throttle, and I don't believe that's even close to the rpms where the motor makes the power. I'm at around 300 miles, and the gentle riding is harder than I thought it would be. I'm slowly allowing more rpms with each 100 miles. Once I hit 500, I'll ride a little closer to my normal riding style without cracking the throttle.

The bars are incredibly comfortable. Perfect shoulder height and a world of improvement over the stock Fatboy bars.

The bars alone make it feel like a completely different bike, and that was my goal. I'm hoping there's a considerable difference in power once I'm able to open it up, and that'll make it all worth while.

The stock 88" was plenty of power, truthfully, but I began getting that itch to have a new bike. Taking this route, I managed to save a ton of money over a newer HD with a larger displacement motor.

I have the 95 kit in my bike with the se211 cams, 5 speed. I can tell you that 103's will be in the rear view mirror. The 88 motor can get to 100hp with ease. Have fun an hang on bro!!! Bars look good too.

Looks great!

I have an 03 FatBoy with Wild One 12" Outlawz and a 95" kit w/SE203 CAMs and mild head work. Bars are awesome but initially kind of wished I went with 14's. Softails are different in that you "sit in" the bike vs on it, like a Touring bike, so the 12's have accomplished the goal of added comfort and the finish on them is top notch.

Also, the FatBoy always feels "quicker" than my 103 Deluxe or 103 RKC. However the top end in the bigger motors eventually wins out. Off the line however, 95" all the way!

I just ordered a Mikuni 42mm Carb for the FatBoy though so I can take more advantage of that setup. Should have it on in a couple weeks.

Good luck breaking it in and ride safe!

First your bike is one of the nicest I've seen...great job!

A buddy of mine that has a 2012 road glide (103) and I where coming back from Laughlin last April and he felt froggy so I jumped we where on I40 with clear traffic so we thought we would let the horses run..He has a stage 1 true duals (MGS) at 100 mph he thought he was gone...well at 120 when I could reach over and slap his helmet he was a little surprised. We stopped in Ludlow and his first comment was man that thing runs great, I said not bad for a 5 speed and a 95 kit...LOL I thought he was going to **** himself. Bottom line is bottom end, mid range, top end that kit in a 88 is a beast. All about gearing too. He is on the forums here so this story is fact not fiction...

Thanks DynaJ! The FatBoy was my first Harley and as long as I can help it, it will always be in the family.

I agree 100% - 95" kits in 88" motors, when done right, are the shizzballz. Softails do carry a much lighter load (100+ lbs less than a Road Glide). But who cares about that when its time to roll back on the right hand grip!

I have CAMs in both 103's and headwork but the true dual fishtails kill off some of the power. Its ok though, they make up for not being the quickest bike I have with more cubic inches and cool factor. The FatBoy's the sleeper...

My 02 TC88 S/S with S&S 510's in it is fast as hell off the line but anything over 90 mph seems to lose it with the 5 speed.

I'd like to ride a 95 in a Softail frame to see what it feels like running through a 5 speed.

Still dragging through the break-in period. My first time doing a break-in on a bike without a tach, and I have no idea where my rpms are at. I can only guess that based on engine vibrations and sound, I'm not going much past the 1/2 way point, which should be around 3000 rpm. Regardless of my revs, I'm not holding any particular speed long enough to matter. Only up to 400 miles in a week, but most of the last week has been rain. Once I hit 500 miles, I'll begin giving it a bit more throttle in each gear and holding the speeds longer. I don't think I can wait until 1000 miles to get on it, so I'm thinking at 800 miles I'll change the oil and run it with reckless abandon.

Any arguments against that plan?
