Thx for the reminder - Should be a direct fit no added spacer needed. I ran that same pulley on my Breakout. That is actually the most popular upgrade pulley for softail / touring / dyna bikes. you will however need the matching shorter sportster bolts. part number is on page 1 post #2

Yes, thanks for the reminder on THAT! I may go down to my dealer and get those ordered today. Hopefully, they won't want an arm and a leg for them.
Actually, this is a good opportunity to replace those, cuz when I changed out my wheels, several years back, I ignorantly reused the originals; but when I discovered it was a big no-no, I've been religiously checking them before, during and after each ride. Just hope they don't shear off when I try to back them out, for all the red locktite I used. Don't want to melt the powder coat on the wheels or the paint on the stock pulley, either, so need to torch them only lightly or not at all to remove them...

red loctite! good luck with that, for red you only use a little bit. blue you can coat the whole thing. hope it comes off easy. those bolts here in USA are $1 to $2 each depending on dealership. So maybe for your location, $5-$6 each? the bolts come with washers and a patch of loctite already on the threads. just torque in the service manual 2-step process to correct values. I tend to go to the tighter end of the range on the final torque.

1,700 yen (approx. $15.50) for the entire set of pulley bolts. Not bad for Japan, I guess. Funny the reactions you get when you tell the guys at the dealer what kinds of upgrades you're doing, especially conservative, "do-everything-by-the-book" Japanese guys! "68T Sportster pulley on a Softail?" "Isn't your belt too small?" "Isn't the pulley too wide?" etc. etc...
I just have to say, "it's okay, guys, I've done my research (LA Dog's the MAN!). I've got it covered..."

BTW, I don't think I totally soaked the bolts in red, but I probably put more than just a "dab." LOL.

^ lol that's funny- and so true. so next time you roll on up at the dealer you can show 'em your 'not by the book' pulley mod and do a few burnouts..

for the red loctite on pulley bolts, another member here said 2-3 drops per bolt is specified in an earlier HD service bulletin. but you won't need to worry about that now with the new bolts.

Default 132T or 133T belt theory

Lindosan and I just had an interesting private message exchange.

He contacted me to tell me that he and LA_Dog have apaprently determined that LA_Dog's 2013 Breakout has a belt that MAY be different than my 2014 has. He asked if I had any way to chgeck how many teeth mine does.

I said no, as I personally did not do the regearing. My local dealership HD technician did. So, I did not even see the belt when it was off the bike. and, with the belt and both guards on the bike, and the inability to turn the wheel because there is no centerstand on a Harley, and my bike being stored between rides inside an enclosed trailer, it is pretty much impossible to see any printing on the belt even if it is present somewhere, and counting teeth is pretty hard to do anyway without somehow marking the belt every foot or so and rolling the bike.

It SOUNDS to me that the "ideal" belt length MIGHT have been determined by HD to be 132.5 teeth, so they went either up or down to get to the nearest non-fractional tooth count, and then also probably considered which one, 132 or 133 teeth, was more available during a specific model year, and bought that. This, rather than export market considerations, might have resulted in both 132T and 133T belts being installed at the factory, depending upon the daily availability.

This may also explain why the position of the axle varies from bike to bike. (Recall how my axle seemed to be further forward with stock pulleys than LA_Dog's was)

This might also explain why there appears to be only ONE part number when 2 different tooth-count belts are is use.

This is just a theory at this point, but worth considering.

IF this is the case, riders who want the longer belt because they intend to make ONLY the rear pulley change, might make an effort to check their local dealer's inventory, and look for the 133T version.

Again, this is just a theory to test out.

^ Thanks Jim- it's **** like this that will make a bike owner pull their hair out when doing upgrades. Lindosan pointed out a very good discrepancy in part numbers vs description.

All of the DS catalogues / aftermarket belt makers specify a 133t belt for Breakout, regardless of year.

Zodiac Netherlands quick reference lookup specifies 133t for all Softail 2007-up
http://catalog.zodiac.nl/en/Catalog/...S/Product.aspx

Ronnies HD parts microfiche specifies the SAME Breakout belt part 40059-09A number for 2013 - 2015, but, different tooth count in the description:

2013 lists it as 133t
http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....ND%20SPROCKETS

2014 lists it as 132t
http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....ND%20SPROCKETS

2015 lists it as 132t
http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....ND%20SPROCKETS

2016 parts are not listed yet.

Supposedly, all softail run the same belt part number since they have the same 32/66 pulleys and general same frame.

Below is a list of all HD drive belts NOT obsolete as of March 2015. This should help with ordering a 133t belt. From what I have found, it may be that part number 40059-09A (133T) was superseded by 40059-09 in 2014, and went to 132T - but many catalogues only list 40059-09A regardless of year, even though they are probably 132T after 2013.

Here is the reference to a spec change of the SAME part number (which sucks - I hate it when they do that- use a NEW part number HD!:
https://shop.newcastlehd.com/part/40059-09a
"40059-09A Harley-Davidson $160.54 - Superseded by: 40059-09 - SKU: HD-40059-09A - BELT,RR/SEC DRV/132T,24MM"

So what do we do? Maybe it is a non issue. More than likely Jim has a 132T belt and the 30/70 fit without issue. Lindosan, your JP spec 20mm belt shows 132T as well, so it should also fit. I don't see a 131T for JP.

Thanks Jim and LA, I wouldnt be able to explain it as good as you guys with my poor English !

My bike is a 96" 2014 Jap model so if I can believe Ronnies, the belt is only 131T,20mm, its possible since they only gave it a 64T rear pulley from stock. (cant wait to do the upgrade)
