Default Platinum Air Suspension Install Complete - Update

Anyone put one of these on? It looks pretty straigtforward but I am not sure I like the stainless mounting plate they give to use to mount the control valves on.

I think it is going to stick out like a sore thumb looking at the bike....considering I have a night train.

The obvious answer of course would be to paint it...and I probably will but I am wondering if anyone else just used their stock splash guard and mounted the controls to that.

Open to ideas. I am including a not so great pic of the stainless plate I am talking about....this will replace the stock splash guard in front of the rear wheel.

I actually have my stock splash guard replaced by a piece of stainless. It isn't anything to do with an air ride, just replacement of thefactory plastic. It really trims up that part of the rear end and shows off the wheel/tire. It is a pain to keep it clean (especially since I am a slacker about washing my bike), but even when it is dirty I think it looks cool. Mine is dirty in my pics but you can see it here. It would look reallygood in black on yours.

Hammer,

Paint that stuff black, and it should look fine. Please provide some feedback after you finsh the project, and let us know how that ride quality is.

Spike95,

**OFF TOPIC** Your bike is looking sick/hard dude. Bold move on a Deluxe...considering most other babies theirs by adding more $hit to it. I like that alot. Have you thought of wrapping that 2 into 1 pipe. Would lookhard wrapped. Below isa picture from my bikeof thepiece I think you were talking about. Harley calls it afender extender.

Well...a couple of major break throughs this afternoon.....Platinum's website doesn't list this kit for 2007s on their site....it stops at 2004. I am starting to suspect why....the damn thing doesn't fit. A LOT of other products don't fit the 07 that do fit earlier models so maybe it's an 07 thing but I do know this kit wouldn't fit this bike without being massaged.

I don't see in any way shape or form how the stainless plate that they sent to me could be used on this bike as it attaches completely differently than the stock splash guard. I gave up trying to make that work and transferred the controls over to the stock splashguard....they fit perfectly in the recess behind the guard at the very top.

I stopped again for now as I think we're going to grill out or go see Silver Surfer but I will try and knock the rest out tonight or in the morning. All I have to do now is to make all of the connections with the hoses and wiring...the mechanical part is done.

I do have pics....but the system is so crammed in there that you won't be able to see much. I took a lot of in progress pics so anyone could see what I did. I don't know if it's right or wrong....but so far it seems be the way to go on an 07.

First test ride completed.

Here's a before and after pic.

All the way up:

Slammed. Tire is NOT rubbing at this point..although I don't know how.

The system is ok.....nothing special as far as quality etc although I must admit I have nothing to compare to for other kits so I'd give them a C (for average) on the overall quality.

Directions absolutely SUCK. I don't know why manufacturers can't take an hour or so and write up some competent and well thought out instructions with maybe (gasp) even a picture or two. All of them are the same way so the first to separate themselves might be on to something. For any manufacturers that might read this....people perceive the quality of the product by the amount of frustration involved installing!! Use your head and if you want to sell more product by word of mouth then GET SOME DAMN DIRECTIONS THAT MAKE SENSE! [:@]

The stainless mounting plate I did not use for two reasons...I think I could have hacked it in to make it fit but it would have been absolutely hideous on a Night Train and I didn't want to paint it anyways. The paint would chip easily etc so I refit the control solenoids and relay to the stock splash guard. This is something I think Platinum should consider incorporating. If you look at my pics...try to picture a flat stainless plate with no sides sitting there....ugh.

Control switches are ok but kind of cheap. I personally would prefer a better switch set up but it gets the job done and again to compare to other vendors....I haven't used anyone else so maybe these are ok.

When you go to tighten the REAR of the shocks...they must be slightly thinner than the originals as the stock shoulder bolt bottomed out before it tightened.I had to run to Lowes to track down some 5/8 washers to take up the slack.....I am sure I am not the first one this has happened to...so Platinum should throw some washers in or redesign the rear of the shock.

Overall the thing went together easy enough and seems to work pretty good although I have only taken a short jaunt around the neighborhood. I need to figure out the rebound dampening because....guess what....the damn directions don't explain it for crap.

I'll give a full recap or at least a follow up recap after a couple of weeks of riding to see how it goes.

So far...I'd score it a "C" for average as far as quality....and a "B" for the level of ride height adjustability. The bike will go from one extreme to the other at the flip of a switch.
