Default Grey Fellow

Hey All,

New to the forum and looking to see about getting some answers on a build I'm currently researching before I get started as I like to have the project all spec'd out on paper before I even purchase any parts. This allows me to stay on track and buy only what I need as I know many projects end up getting sold off cause no plan was taken into consideration or they went over budget.

As mentioned in the new member forum, I've been around street, motocross, flat track and ridden many bikes (Ducati, BMW, Yamaha, Honda and Harley). Some time ago I sold my bikes to go back to school and now in a place to get back to it and would like to build one. I'm pretty mechanical and can weld, so I'm not worried about that since I'm currently wrapping up my 1964-1/2 Malibu build. I replaced 90% sheet metal, fab work and paint and body. In terms of motor and frame, I'm looking between a 96 or 103 ci and Kraft Tech 200mm rear.

I'm looking to build a softail according to the following pictures, which came from Thunderbike Customs in Germany (see picture). I would like to build this same bike or get as close I can get to it. Since there website doesn't state any specs in German or English, I'm left with having to place guess work. I can find some of the parts on Thunderbike's shopping site and cross referencing to American shops.

My initial questions are the following:
  1. Has anyone built anything very similar to this? If so, do you mind shedding some light on your specs.
  2. Does anyone have detailed specs on this bike?
  3. Does the frame appear to be a 35* rake with 2" up stretch?

I really appreciate everyone's input on this and would like to see where this goes - thanks all!

I Would contact Thunderbike Customs directly as I expect they will be happy to sell you the parts they made to build the bike? They already tell you the bike started life as a Rocker C and what parts they added to it. Check out "BIkes" "New Projects" towards the bottom.

Check with Russell Mitchell from Exile Cycles. He builds stuff like that.

I know Vicious Cycles in Atascadero has built some pretty amazing customs. Ive known Allen for 40 years. Good guy. He might be able to help you with some ideas.

To me, that would be the obvious answer. Contact Thunderbike and see what they had to say, it's worth a try anyway.

Oh for sure! It's pretty crazy what they're doing. I sent Thunderbike an email asking about specs for the Grey Fellow. There is not a whole lot out there in therms for Rocker models as Craigslist only has a few listings and most are in the 11k up range. Specs on the frame are 36.5* rake, 37.5* fork angle and 6.2 trail. Cam across Kraft Tech making a 1 3/8 tubing frame at 35* rake with 2" up stretch. I asked Thunderbike what similar frame would be comparable to the Rocker frame so waiting to hear back. I'd be curious to know what everyone's thoughts are on similar frames. This is a bit new to me as I know car chassis's but not bike chassis's. Thinking of just going ahead and using the Kraft frame with EVO motor per their motor recommendation for frame use and trying to model out the other parts within the states. Thunderbike has a lot of killer in-house parts but so far it seems like they are model specific.

Wow...... I am officially old.....

When I read the title, "Grey Fellow", I immediately was thinking about the classic "Silent Grey Fellow"....

I'm assuming this is NOT what the OP wants to build........?

The OP wasn't talking about this bike, but I sure would like one!
