Techno research tuning fatboy
First time poster here.... I’ve had my 2004 fat boy for 3 years now, and I’m tired of feeling like the engine is going to blow revved out running 80mph trying to keep up. I talked with a local indie shop that I trust, and the owner suggested the techno research tuning. Basically drill and tap exhaust, run a sensor and drive the bike logging the data and writing the tune off that data. Says my power will increase from bottom to top and instead of sounding like I’m bouncing off rev limiter at 90mph I’ll be in lower rpms with room to go. I’ve searched and found no reviews on it so I’m curious if anyone here has any experience with it. Thanks guys.
I had one on my ‘16 RK. It’s very flexible IF you know how to tune it. You need to connect it to a computer to view and adjust the tables...plus know what you’re doing. Assuming you have an EFI bike too...
It sounds like you’re basically talking about doing a stage 1 to your bike...that means it should have the stock AC, pipes, and factory tune still...that’s bw impressive for an ‘03 Fatboy. If it is all stock, you’ll need more than just a tune to get significant results...and even then a stage 1 is nice, but not world changing.
Basically a stage 1 tune will need free breathing pipes and high flow AC to go with it. It will give you a little bump in power and response, increase your rev limiter, but you’re rpms at 90 will still be the same. You’ll just get there a little quicker. Your motor at 90 will still sound like it’s going 90...louder with a stage 1.
A 6 speed transmission will lower your RPMs about 400 rpms, but they are pricey.
so overall I’m not sure a tuner by itself is really what you need.

Sorry, should of stayed, it is al stock except it has cobra pipes. I’m ready to start nodding it after riding a 05 road king for the past few weeks. I just like the feel of the fatboy over a bigger bike. The 6 speed on the RK was nice, but I like being able to throw my bike anywhere I want it. With that being said, what do you suggest for AC? I’m also looking into air ride on the rear, mainly for show, but what brand should I be looking for? Thank you.
People like Legend air ride. There’s another popular brand but the name escapes me. There’s a sub forum on suspension or you could search “air ride”...Axios I think? Only issue is it’s not the best for handling if you like riding aggressively. Not sure how much premium shocks would help a Fatboy, but it should handle better for throwing around.
For AC, there’s a lot that work well. I still like the classic S&S teardrop, but Ness Big Sucker is popular too. If your indie likes the techno and knows how to tune it should work.
You can can add the six speed. Baker makes a good one. I think HD has a retro fit one, but Baker isn’t much more $$ I think.
Also consider a 95” kit maybe (stage 3 - pricey) or a more aggressive cam (stage 2 - cheaper).

A tune will affect how the bike runs at all RPMs.... but it won't fix this..!!!
The RPMs at a given speed are the product of gearing (to include oversize or undersize tires). If you are all stock, and "feeling like the engine is going to blow revved out running 80mph trying to keep up." A tune won't change that.....!!!! It'll just run faster & smoother to that point..
I have a six speed bagger, and two five speed softails... when I jump on a softail from the bagger, I find myself occasionally trying to shift up one more gear... They are geared differently..
I love modding my bikes.. I have each a stage I, stage II, and Stage III bikes... Go ahead and get it tuned, any OEM bike will benefit from a tune. Personally, for my '03 EFI bike, I put 18mm bungs on the exhaust, got a PowerVision tuner (with the AT Pro) and dialed in a MAP given to me by DynoJet. My '03 has 95ci big bore kit, and runs great!!!! But I still occasionally try to shift it into 6th (it has a 5 speed) because of the gearing....
But ........ you sound like you will need a gearing change before you are happy... do it with final drive/trans gearing or throw a 6-speed Baker on your bike, and several other options... your wallet will be your only limitation....
Good luck with your mods...
