Help! My Deluxe died
Need your help. Yesterday I was at the beach with my buddy crusing the coast and my 2007 Softail Deluxe just upanddied! It was like someone turned off the ignition. All the electrical just stop working. I rolled into a Donut shop parking lot and the Speedomter was stuck at 22MPH and nothing would come on or work. I pulled the seat and both battery cables were loose. Called HOG and out came the dealer with a new battery but that didn't help and nothing worked, dead as a door nail. Anyone have a clue as to what happend? Is there a fuse or security system reset that needs to be done, what is it????? I had it towed back to the dealer and it won't even get looked at until tomorrow. I'm so bummed!
Had something similar happen to my bike and it turned out that the bolt that held in the ground came loose. I called the dealer and this was the first thing they told me to check. When I did, it was loose, so I tighted it back up, recharged the battery and haven't had the problem since.
Is it EFi and have you washed it recently? I've heard people having problems with water getting into the connection to the computer after washing that caused similar symptoms. I don't have EFI so I'm not sure where to tell you to look...
The shop will find that in minutes. The electrical shop manual has flowcharts and check points to isolate that kind of issue. I'm still waiting for my '08 manuals to arrive.
Since the shop has bike now, kind of moot to keep chit-chatting here about what it could be. There wasn't enough info in your thread for me to help.
After the new battery was installed, did the idiot lights light when you turned the ignition on, did the headlight come on (even very dim), did the main 30amp fuse get checked, was the security (key symbol) red ligh flash on gauge? When the ignition was turned on, did your speedometer needle go back to zero?
Most of these are seperate circuits and will guide the tech to your failure.
Let us know what they find!

Yes, there is a main fuse. As I recall, you cannot miss it when looking under the seat. It is right behind the battery under a plastic cover. I tend to believe that it was the main ground though. It does not sound like the main computer as the bike would at least turn over if that was the case.

i've got a 08 deluxe that has quit on me twice. once at about 250 miles and once at 600 miles. the first time i had electrical power but would'n fire. i got it running by pushing on the fuses and moving the fuse box around a little. the 2nd time i found that my fuel pump wasn't coming on when turning on the power. i don't know what caused that problem yet but i think it has something to do with the fuse coming loose or a wire going open to that circuit it's not a short because the fuse was good. i checked for any codes and there were none. when i'm done riding for the season the dealer is going to find the problem. when thing that i found was when they installed my power commander they left it hanging instead ofmounting or tyrapping ??????
My 05 Deluxe died on me twice unexpectantly in the past. The problem involved the small white clip that goes to the starter. It vibrated loose but was still connected to the starter. With the aid of a flashlight and a long flat blade screwdriver you can try pushing on it to nudge it fully on. It cost me $30 bucks at a dealership out on the road to gain this tidbit of knowledge. The second time I took care of it myself with no problem. I don't know if this is your problem but it is a cost free check. I hope it helps.
Sorry to hear about your problem, Hogdeluxe. Hope you get it fixed to your satisfaction. BTW, I got my tank and fender bibs and they're great!, will send some pics when I get the chance. I hope this problem doesn't ruin your enthusiasm for making custom leather assessories for the deluxe!
