Default 07 Custom Softail Shimmy

I have an 07 custom softail and about 8 different times it goes into a front end shimmy and won't stop till you either get out of the rut in the road or slow down drastically. I talked with different salesman, one told me he knows what I'm saying, he had one and got rid of it. He said the front tire is too narrow. Another one told me he has 57,000 miles on his and never had it happen. Who do I believe? I want to trade it on a fat boy. Now there's some tire width.

Haven't had the problem with mine that I can remember. But even at that I don't think it will happen or feel as bad if it does since I replaced the bars for shorter fatter ones. The new bars feel a LOT more solid and its actually easier to control than it was with the mini-apes, especially at lower speeds.

I have noticed that mine feels a little *** heavy at timesand that the front wheel seems to float a bit but I am also wondering if an air foil down at the regulator might stop that feeling...

I have an 07 heritage classic. I had a front end rattle that I told my dealer about. Sounded like something was loose like the headlight or fender rattle. For a while I thought it was the dome on the front rim. I also noticed that when I would come to a stop, It would wobble. Like it was very top heavy. For instance, I couldn't look to the left for traffic as I turned right. Roll and go at a yield sign. I had to concentrate on keeping my balance.Shortly thereafter I nailed a couple of deer and one smashed my leg and the front of my bike. Now since the tubes were bent the dealer would not give me the new ones under warrantee. I make a call to harley, the dealer didn't, and they were cool about the whole thing. I put the bike back together, in my wheelchair, and have had a couple of rides. This is a completly different bike. I literaly hated the bike before, now I don't want to sell it. The rattle is gone, I dont have balance problems, It's great.
Hope that helps
Hey Citiorplus, What bars did you put on?

Its the 3 deg tree's, they are pushing the limits of the caster /trail and you dont have to worry about it. Jus relax a bit or hit the throtle to get out of it!! Lower the rear a bit helps! try to soften the preload by turning the adjusters clockwise this will help if you are not a hevy person!!

Fork Brace. Try this link http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_main.jsp, and type fork brace in the search box. There are 2 types, the SE , and the harlye one. I have the harley one. They really do work.

I have the same one and put it on within a few days of getting the bike, maybe that's why I never had the wobbely front endproblem.

Hey Citiorplus, What bars did you put on?
I put on a set of HD's bars tht have the built in tach housing, I wanted a tach but didn't really like the combo unit. I'm not very keen on the idea of having to look down instead of where I am going. The bar kit isPN=55835-05, They are slightly narrower than thestock mini apes but they arelower so I don't havemy hands up in the air. With the old bars myright handalways started to go to sleep and start hurting after 25 or so miles.

This is a pic of the bike with the stock bars, slightly tipped back. I was trying to see if the stock bars wouldn't bother me as much if I tipped them closer to me. But it only posponed the problem for a short time.

Here's the bike with the new bars. You can see just how much lower they are. They are much more comfortable and feel more solid.
And yes I know the frame protectors are on. I was going to change the oil and install my oil cooler after I finished taking the pics.

All good here. No brace, stock bars, never wobbled. Up to 90mph in 5th. Had the HD steerer kit put in at the 1000 mile service and it stopped the "clunk" that we've experienced and made her real quiet on big bumps and RR tracks. Love that skinny tire.

JerryG,

Do you have the number for the service bulletin or part #?

I like to be prepared?

Mike
