Default question about engine upgrades...

brother has an 01 FXST.... and we happened upon some new parts for a 96"
....just starting to do some research, but figured I'd start here

we have Cylinders, Heads, and Cams

first obvious question.... can I use any of these parts?

i know it's a vague question, but i need to start somewhere... maybe if i could get some direction about where to start in possibly using anything from the 96" parts for the 88"?

thanks, paul

If you want to use those parts, you're going to have to start by splitting the cases to accept a larger crank. The 96" motors have a "stroker" crank, but the
88" that is in his bike currently is shorter. I'm in the market for a set of 96" silver heads for my 2007 FXST.....I may be interested in the ones that you happened upon.

Yes you can these parts in your 88". however the cylinders are the same size as the stock ones. The difference in size from the 88" - 96" motors comes from the stroker flywheel. You do not have to bore your cases to acccept the cylinders unless you are going to make a 110" or larger motor. I have a stroker flywheel in cojunction with previous cylinders for a 95" motor which yields it a 103". The cases had to be split to replace the flywheels but no case boring was required.

i also forgot to mention that we have the jugs, as well.... and i'm being told a few different things by others as well...particularly, about the crank

do i in fact need a larger crank and flywheel?

Smile how to determine engine size

Bore X Bore X Stroke X .7854 X the number of cylinders will tell you the size of the motor in CI. For example a stock 88" has a bore of 3.75" & a stroke of 4.0". If you stroke the crank to 4.375" but leave the bore @ 3.75" the end result is 96"ci. Using a stroker flywheel with aforementioned numbers & boring the cylinders to 3.875 will yield a 103"ci motor. Now if you really want to get creative bore the cases & cylinders out to 4" & you get just a shade under 110"ci. What you need to keep in mind whenever you do any motor work is that all the parts I.E. cylinder heads, cams, intake tract, carb/induction module, must compliment one another otherwise you are just wasting time & money. Lastly don't forget the exhaust. Drag pipes may look really cool but unless you are racing on a drag strip you are losing horsepower. A two into one exhaust while not particulary sexy will blow the doors of other exhaust sytems every time.
