Why lower?
I agree it's primarily for cosmetic reasons. But it was also to lower my riding height on a Cross Bones. The stock seat, bike height and stock seat springs have you riding a lot higher than any other softail. I love the feel of the bike w/ a badlander seat but it loses the spring seat retro look that appeals to me. The 2 inch drop, a new bobber seat and shorter seat springs were able to get my riding height down w/o losing the retro look.
The ride is stiffer and I tend to scrap my foot boards much more than before the drop.

Thanks for all the replies gang, I pretty much knew it was a cosmetic thing also, but it is the bottoming out and scraping I was wondering about, and wondering if it is worth it. From the responses, I take it that it is for you that do it.
I guess it's also a taste thing too. Like bars, bags, flames, and skulls. I like mine the way it sits, the bags hide the gap, plus I have the bigger tire,(with the narrow sprocket and belt "kit"), and with a 34 inch inseam I don't have trouble reaching the ground.
After seeing these pics though, it would look good lowered in the config I have it in now. My solo seat with the bags and backrest off and the handlebars cranked forward straight up, I see your point in lowering. But now, it only takes 15 minutes to change it back so the wife can ride too.
Can't answer your question, both pics are sweet!! But I'm kinda leaning toward the second one because of the Springer front end, but I could be a tad bias
