Default Changing Oil Question

Well it is getting to 5,000 miles and I thought I would do the service myself.
When I change the oil, I need to remove the oil filter.
Now when I had my Ultra Classic, I bought a curved plastic drain pan that fit under the oil filter and then had a drain hole at the other end so it would drain into a pan and prevent the oil from getting on the engine and frame.
Would I use this same type on the 08 Softail Custom?
It seems like the forward controls would be in the way. I don't know if they fit all bikes or not. If I have to buy one, I want the correct one. I tried cardboard for a while when I had my Ultra Classic and gave up and just bought the plastic filter drain piece.

What do you guys use when you remove the oil filter?

Thanks in advance.
Ron

I use a plastic 1QT Milk Container. Cut a section out along the top and front (bottom of container) and slip it under the Oil filter and unscrew the filter and let it drop in. I usualy loosen the filter a bit first so I can use my hand to loosen it the rest of the way.

Have some rags ready just in case.

I use a empty toilet roll holder , ( cut the paper down the middle ) side it in between the filter and let it go.

Oil filter is the same

I use a strap wrench to loosen the filter, just be careful of the sending unit below the filter.

I've given up on all methods of catching the oil without making a mess. Every method I have tried ends up spilling some oil. Now I just let it make a mess and clean up after. It is quicker and I always had to clean up anyway.

I tried the tin foil and the zip lock bag and still made a mess. Pissed me off. Next I'll try the bottle trick. Maybe by my next oil change I'll have an emtpy toilet roll hanger (can;t make this one up eah!!)...
