Default 09 Heritage Softail Classic Engine Temp

After riding my Heritage today I hooked it up to my laptop to accept the trim values on my PCV. The engine temp was 271, that seems high to me. What is the engine temp supposed to be running, I understand oil temp is different.

What type of riding were you doing, stop & go, highway, mixed? What was the ambient temperature outside? There are so many threads on oil temp you might want to search, but Moco says 275 would not be uncommon on a hot day, especially with stop & go, & could go as hight as 300, but I would sure think about running synthetic if you're not already.

The highest I saw my oil temp was 260 and that was when the bike was stock and the air temps were 110 degrees riding at freeway speeds. Mine seems to hover around 225 on a hot day now of mixed riding. The cylinder temps will be hotter though and you can get a rough reading with an IR gun.
