Rocker Boxes
I wanna change my rocker boxes from the standard alum. finish to the wrinkle black ones. Anyone know how difficult this will be with the motor still in the bike?? Thanks
I changed mine from polished to chrome. It's not difficult at all with the motor in the bike. You will need to take off the gas tank. I was stubborn and just disconnected it and worked underneath it, but if I had to do it again taking the tank off completely would be much easier. I also pulled out the push rods and changed the pushrod supports to chrome at the same time. Not a hard job, did mine in the garage in a couple of hours. You will need new gaskets and they are pretty pricey.
Not too tough, but I personally liked having the dealer do it, so if something wasn't right, it was their azz not mine. But I also had them change out the lower rocker boxes too, not just the top...which is definitely more work & more involved.
i'm about to do the swap here in a few days... had a set of take-offs powder coated so i can just remove my stock and put the newly coated ones on. over in the dyna section, we are working on a system where you buy a set of pcoated covers and send your stock set back to joe (JRK) (POWDER PRO IS THE FORUM SPONSOR). he then coats those and the next guy buys and sends his stockers in... you get the point!
well here in a few days or week i will have how to posted over in the dyna section...

Get a manual and follow it closely. Torque values are pretty critical and a couple of the bolts are hard to get to and torque correctly without a 7/16" ( I think) dogbone extension. Also each cylinder has to be at TDC on the power stroke when when removing and tightening up the rocker assemblies......you'd hate to do it with the intake or exhaust valve open. roll the bike in 4th gear or so with the plugs out, and shine a flashlight into the plug hole so you can see the piston. When it comes up to the top and both valves are closed.....you got TDC. Do them one at a time. It's not a hard thing to do, but I wouldn't attempt it without the manual.
