Default Replacing Derby Cover on 08 Softail Custom

So I just bought my dream bike, 08 Softtail Custom in Pacific Blue Pearl/Vivid Black, YAY!

I'm about to replace the derby cover with my Willie G Skull Cover and remembered a problem I had once. I did this on my sportster a couple years ago and it acted a little funny. Turns out there was a clutch tension spring inside that came out and was lost.

My questions are: Does my FXSTC have this spring and if it does how do I remove the stock cover without it getting lost? How is it held in place and is it easy to switch it to the new cover?

Thanks in advance!

Nothing will come out when you pull your cover off, but you will need a new gasket to put on the new derby cover. The stock cover has grooves a rubber seal fits in. The Willie G cover will need a flat gasket to seal.

I bought the rubber gasket the first time I changed the oil but haven't replaced it once in about 4 oil changes.

Easy as cake 10 minutes tops

1 have someone hold bike straight (so oil won't run out)

2 Remove screws holding cover on

3 replace gasket

4 put cover back on

Good Luck!

Nothing will go SPROING when you remove the cover. You will need a new (old style) gasket though.

Like they said, you'll need the crush gasket instead of the rubber band. Just make sure that you keep the scoot level (if it's on the jiffy stand, you'll end up leaking some primary fluid) and be careful removing and reinstalling the torx screws...they strip easily.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't know I'd need a new gasket so I'll go get that. In regards to the tension spring, how is that handled on this model?

Congrats on your bike! Just did this this week myself. I removed my Willie G skull (too many folks running it) and replaced with the #1 skull. Replacement gasket is less than $15.
Like prior post said, just keep the bike square.

alright i've been dropping oil spots in my garage for the past couple months where I park my road king. it appears that its coming from my derby cover or at least that general area. I was looking for advice on fixing this, my questions are:
should I just try tightening the allen screws?
or should I remove the derby cover to have a look, and if so will I need a new gasket?
will I need to loctite the allen screws when I replace them?
thank you for any help!

I never locktited my screws on my 07 and once i installed the new paper gasket i have never replaced it and have 60,000 miles on it and have opened it up many times for oil changes and clutch adjustments and one main shaft bearing replacment.
