I got this from a HD dealer... KLEEN KING, made by Faultless Starch Company. it works while the pipes are hot. so you can clean up as soon as the ride is over, no need to wait 'til things cool down. works great.

A few points that are important;

Use a cotton rag on hot surfaces, micro fiber will melt and make it worse

Be carefull with oven cleaner it can damage aluminium and painted surfaces.

I use Noxin#7 metal polish on a cotton rag with pipes warm - touch it to the spot let it sizzle for a few seconds and wipe away with light pressure.

This works well for me.

Good thing to know about the microfibres...that's all I touch my bike with and didn't know that they were synthetic. Just didn't think of it I guess. Thanx.

I would recommend dropping by any bike store and pick up Road Rub.

no getting the exhaust hot or using oven cleaner. this stuff is designed for the purpose of removing boot heel rubber that has melted onto any chrome parts of the bike.

works just like a Chap-Stick. rub it over the area, then wipe off. and you can do it on a completely cool bike.

as you work it in, it flakes off as a fine powder, so you don't have to worry about it damaging/marring other parts of the bike while you are cleaning the boot mark off.

also works great for any bugs that might stick onto the exhaust while you are riding as well.

the stuff is amazing...

Use a pre 1974 penny for boot marks or tar on pipes. Pre 74' were made out of copper which is softer than chrome and will not scratch. I didn't believe it until I tried it. It works great and doesn't leave a mark as long as you have "good" chrome. Looks like you have V&H which is top of the line so you will be fine.

It's made of natural rubber and baking soda. Takes some elbow grease, but it does work somehow, without scratching the pipe. It looks like a deodorant stick.

I wouldn't do the Easy Off thing. I've used it to take a pinstripe off a fender, but had a bad experience on the pipes. Spraying it on a hot pipe created an acid steam that immediately etched my black frame with a whitish looking overspray and caused the mounting bolt to corrode and rust.

No need for any chemicals...Have used this trick for many years: cool pipes, use a utility razor blade (like a Gillette Widget) held at a very flat angle to the pipe. Scrapes the boot rubber right off, leaves no marks on the chrome. Wipe any smudges clean with your favorite polish or...not.
Also like the idea posted here about hot pipes and cotton rag. Great idea!
