Default '08 Custom Softail?

New member here and first post! Thanks in advance for any responses. Has anyone else experienced the rear shock going bad quickly and leaking oil? I put on 2500 miles the summer and fall I purchased it in '08. That winter I noticed oil leaking from it so I had it replaced last spring. I put on maybe 1000 miles all summer and walk out to the garage to a puddle of shock oil again. What gives? Is this a common problem with this model? Almost regret buying it now, especially if this is going to be a yearly problem. Is there a better shock I can put on it?

Welcome to the forum.

Are you sure it's shock oil and not dripping from somewhere else? I had an 07 that developed a case leak and would leak engine oil on to the floor.

I had an '05 Ultra Classic that leaked due to porosity in the engine cases. Your bike is under warranty. Let a dealer worry about it.

my tranny drain plug leaked once cuz I tore the o ring when putting the plug back in. The fluid would drip hit the shock then roll around til it dripped to the floor. never heard of a shock leaking. heck I didnt know the rears had oil in them so what the hell do I know. good luck with it anyway.

I have a 2007 Softail Custom with 34K miles with no shock problems.

Definitely plan on the dealer taking care of it, just can't believe the same problem keeps happening. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar problem and if they knew what the best solution was.

If it's the shock then it's an easy fix. Put a different brand shock on it and be done. Progressive makes some nice shocks that are an upgrade over the stockers. Since you are under warranty I would let the dealer replace it, then if it goes bad again after your warranty expires, go to the aftermarket for better shocks.

This could be as simple as a sheared o ring on the trans plug. Happens alot. Oil gets blown back to the bottom of the shock. No way two can go bad in that short of time and these are very trouble free.

Its a American Wire 80 spoke radial. Its suppose to be tubeless but when I had the tire installed it leaked. So I had a tube put in it. I was going to Arkansas that week and didn't wont to send it back.
