What is the 'normal' temperature range for an 88 with the stage one. I have a stock bike and its in the 230-240 range but my 88 w/stage 1 runs at 269. Seems too hot. My pipes are blue as hell as well and have been from day 1. Any thoughts?
The highest I've seen on my stock '07 Heritage is 240. I'll be doing the rest of stage 1 next week and was hoping it would run a bit cooler. I'm also getting the 1000 mile service next week and might change to synthetic in the crankcase as I've heard they run cooler with synthetic.
I've been having problems with my oil temperature too... Or so I believe, when it reaches 200 F which I thinks is not too hot, the oil lamp starts blinking in the same decreasing frequency of the idle rpms, the engine tends to go off if I don't throttle a bit.
What could be the problem here??? Isn't it the synthetic oil (3-1 Screamin' Eagle) thinner than the regular HD oil??? I'm I loosing pressure due temperature?
My bike runs 200 - 225 at the most, never had a problem yet.
The only time it ever ran above 225 was last month when it
hit 106 here in the North East.
Synthetics are supposed to drop temps up to 20 degrees. But there are so many other factors that contibute to oil temperature; such as new engine, oil viscosity, fairings, ambiant temp, load, state of tune, type of gas, etc.
You know, what seems to make the biggest difference in temperatures is the temperature guages people keep mounted in their oil tanks in lieu of the plug. These bad boys don't have the resolution or accuracy of a turkey thermometer let along provide an actual oil temp reading (this includes the digital jobs).
My 06 Deuce used to run at about 250 degrees using Syn3. Switching to Mobil 1 15W-50 dropped that a good 20+ degrees. Give a good "real" (Group IV) synthetic - Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, whatever - a shot.
I wouldnt worry about your oil temp. highest my got up to was 325 commin into Sturgis after a days long ride. I know eveyone is gonna say faulty temp gage and no way possible. Well Ive talked to 7 different Harley techs and various other cycle mechanics about this, and no one can give me an answer to the prob. I also checked the temp gage, right on the money. My bike is an 03 heritage softail classic with a stage 1 and big bore kit. Only thing I did, was switch my screaming eagle double barrel pipes with Vance and hines long shots. Now i consitantly run at 250 to 280.... seems hot as hell to me but thats why I have a extended warrety... Probably also the reason ive had 4 warped rocker box covers and seals replaced... Anyway, rest easy about your oil temp, ive got 40,000 miles on my bike and its been like this from day one and other than the rockers no other heat realated issues.
